I'm not in nursing school yet, but I plan to be in one soon. It will probably be TWU. My question is though, do any of you know how TWU feels about their nursing students having nose piercings? I don't mean rings or a septum piercing, but just the little stud. Also, what about Denton Regional Hospital? Does anyone know how they feel about their nurses having a nose stud? Thanks. :)

You will have to take it out or cover it up during clinicals. There was a girl in my clinical group who had one, and she covered it up with a tiny flesh colored band aid type thing (or maybe it was just a piece of band aid). For the longest time, I thought she was trying to cover up a major zit on the side of her nose!

Ah, I see. What about the clear retainers? Did she cover it out of fear of being caught with it, or because she was asked to? Was she fine to wear it during regular class?

I recently attended orientation for TWU Dallas and when they said "no piercings other than ears" (double studs at most I believe) a girl asked if she could put in one of those clear things for her nose stud... they said yes.

Also, I got the impression that it didn't matter during class but I'm not positive.

This doesn't really pertain to piercings...but I just found out I can't have nails and I'll have to wear my hair back..yuck! I hate the way my hands look without my solar french tips...but having to wear my hair pulled back is torture for me. My mom and aunt made fun of me when I was younger b/c I wore my hair pulled up everyday (b/c I was a swimmer and never felt like drying/styling it)...and now I have a major complex! Maybe this will be the therapy I've needed!

You only have to cover up nose piercings during clinical. During class, they couldn't care less.

It's like that when you're a 'real nurse', too. I don't like having fake nails anyway, but I HATE having my hair up!

Ok - I am an authentic old fogie..... became a nurse when the earth's crust was still cooling. But I fail to see any huge problem with nose stud-type ornamentation. In Houston, most facilities do not prohibit these because it would be culturally insensitive. Hey, maybe you can convince TWU that your piercing has cultural significance for you . . it's a thought.

However - on the issue of whining about having to lose the long nails or fluffy hair - YIKES. Just what is there about patient safety that is unclear here? There is NO WAY to sanitize long nails, artificial or natural. And NO WAY to prevent long, out of control hair from dropping cooties all over the place. SHEESH - read the research.

I did forget to mention that there was another woman in my clinical group who didn't have to cover up her nose piercing, because it was a cultural thing; she was from Bangladesh.

And I totally agree with you about the nails and hair! I cringe when I see nurses with their hair down. Very unprofessional. And even though it's just a TV show, the nurses on Grey's Anatomy (when they actually bother showing them) wear their hair down as well, and it drives me crazy!

I am starting at Denton Regional and their dress code specifically says "no exposed body piercing jewelry other than two earrings per ear".
