Parkland Hospital, Dallas Texas.

Hello..Anyone working at parkland or has worked there..How much do they start RN1 pay? What is the shift differential at night? weekend? How is there Insurance? Do you like it overall? Please help me with this questions..Thanks

Yes, the people at Parkland are most definitely lying to you because look who you are asking, people from Parkland. What you need to ask them (if you are a legitimate job applicant as you say you are) is what their "deemed status" with CMS is?

The dumbest thing to do is to only ask people from Parkland about their reputation and what's going on with their troubles. They have a lot to lose, so of course, they're going to lie to you or anyone else--that is, if you are who you say you are and not a Parkland administrator pretending to be a job applicant.

I think some cooling off is in order here. I am not sure how a post about Parkland is turning into vicious personal attacks but it is doing nothing to further honest dialogue.

There is no denying that Parkland is in very hot water with the government as well as financially. The implications to the Dallas community could be huge and has already been for those harmed by the poor management and practices that have come to light. Nobody wants to see Parkland fail but there is no way to deny it needs a major ethical overhaul.

OP, if you want to work for Parkland, absolutely do so. There is no harm in it if you do it with your eyes open. If you feel the eight people you have talked to have all the knowledge resources you need, then by all means go forward. One has to wonder though why you are asking about it on a bulletin board then, unless you recognize eight people is a very small sampling or unless you are just very excited at the prospect and were hoping to only hear happy things. Posting on a public board is going to garner both the positive and the negative. You can't pick and choose unfortunately. If you only want to hear good things about Parkland, perhaps you might state so in your post...there is nothing wrong with that. Even then though you must be prepared for a passionate medical populace to express its outrage over what is coming to light from that facility, which, as you know, serves the most vulnerable of the Dallas population. Medicare and Medicaid funding is a huge problem but in many ways the least of them. The findings are atrocious and grave. It is hard to say yet if the culture there can be turned around. One would certainly hope so.

Certainly nobody can be blamed for not wanting to be a part of that mess. If you wish to jump in, then hopefully you can become a part of the solution and goodness knows the hospital needs people willing to do that. It won't be easy. It was considered a challenging place to work even when everything on the surface seemed to be fine.

Either way, I wish you the best of luck. There is no guarantee with any job and we all spin that wheel of chance when we accept a new position. I have classmates who got hired there after graduation. Some are struggling, some are loving it. They are fairly open about their pay scale and I am sure a phone call would reveal what a new nurse there makes fairly easily. I wish you well in your future career, wherever it leads you.

This is a friendly reminder to please discuss the topic without engaging in unfriendly debate or personal attacks. Thank you all for your anticipated cooperation.

Playmaker2008, if you are a legitimate job applicant at Parkland, then by all means do as your heart desires; however, I should state that, in my experiences with Parkland bloggers on various public blogging sites (such as the Dallas Morning News, dallashealthcare.blogspot, etc.), this kind of over-the-top reactionary recriminations against any criticism of the hospital is highly characteristic of Parkland administrators that I have encountered in the past.

Not that I am 100% sure you are a Parkland administrator, but a lot of red-flags do go up with this pattern of hostility against objective citations I put up for problems at Parkland. I do, however, feel that it is everybody's responsibility to put all the information out there that can be verified, not just the rosy unverified word-of-mouth compliments for a hospital from just their own staff.

If any nursing applicant has any serious concerns about a job, then it's best to know about them ahead of time, warts and all, before they get hired, commit themselves, and put their professional reputations on the line.

Honesty and transparency are still the best policies, and I encourage anybody else to chime in on this very important discussion.

Whatever else, it would be an amazing learning experience.

@ Advisor.. I did my interview on Monday and I am excited to become part of parkland organization. I toured the facility and spoke to few nurses who said nothing but good about parkland as an employer. i did ask them about the rumours and they told me there are many many many rumours out there that a good percentage of them are not true and those that are true, they know what happened and they said its not parkland faults.

For example, they just get too many admits at ER such that its possible for someone to collapse waiting at ER..people who come to parkland are mostly poor hispanic and african american who dodnt have insurance, meaning they dont get check ups regularly, meaning they wait too long to seek medical sevice... I personally saw patients with IVs outside parkland smoking ciggarete and eating unhealthy foods, maybe even smoking weed..would this be parkland problem?? parkland is the largest trauma hospital in US and they are making progress by building another facility....its mostly funded by taxpayers (60%) money where most of the patients that come to parkland do not even have jobs...its even hard to know their prior mkedical history since the majority of them dont go for check ups...

For the few reasons above, I strongly suggest that you look that whole picture rather than looking at a few sources that have duplicate information from other sources...Your arguments suggest that you are bitter with parkland, the only reason being that you were fired from parkland.

The interviewer has 15 years of experience and admitted he loves parkland more than any of the 5 previous hospitals some magnet that he has worked. He is 6 months old at parkland and loves. It is true that a good number of people were transfered or let go due to their incompetence but the hospital is making a major comeback! I cant wait to start!!

I was just offered a job at Parkland and I am so happy. After doing 60 hours of clinicals there, it was the only place I wanted to work and the only place I applied. I don't know what "Helpful Advisor"s problem is or where all the anger is coming from. For what Parkland has to deal with, considering it's client population, they are doing a great job. Of course there were problems but they are doing all that they can to fix them. The new Parkland is going to be amazing too with new technology, equipment and space! I can't wait to start and be part of the new Parkland!!

@Jodeface...Congrats to your offer at parkland. I also dont know what 'helpful advisor' is talking about but he sounds very very angry at a place that is recognized around the world as the biggest level 2 trauma in US.wish you all the best at you start your career!

The name parkland in itself is bait, no has to do that. Regardless of the allegations, its a great hospital. This is a placed that receives every other hospital in dallas transfers, anyone who walks through the door, homeless, rich, whoever. its a 100 bed ER where most nights at 2-3 am we still have 150 people in the department. This is also a hospital that when its full divert means nothing, unlike Baylor and methodist who will not receive any other pts. And yes Im a proud employee, there has been mistakes made but we work our butts off day and night. 7pm to 7am there is no downtime for us in the ED. so yes, asking someone who actually works there is beneficial. I would like to see these people writing the articles to see if they last an hour in our shoes. And how about donatating clothes and shoes so people arent discharged in gowns, how about other hospitals stop discharging people with serious medical issues and telling them to follow up at parkland. How about help us help the overcrowding in the ED. Lets educate pts whats considered an emergency, lets educate pts on what needs to be taken care of at PCPs office that way the ER isnt crowded with non-emergent things and we can treat with ill. I can almost positive if parkland is close, Baylor with be just the same with the overcrowding. And i had to chance to travel to a hospital in Cali that made parkland seem like a private hospital.

Pretty sure almost every hospital anywhere would warrant a website on its errors. Dallas needs Parkland. Does it need to straighten up and fly right? Yes. But Dallas needs Parkland.

Yeah, just visited that website. What a bunch of silliness. Didn't get past the report on the laundry. Hello, every hospital everywhere has laundry that has to be cleaned of bodily fluids. Do you think they just throw them out?
