Lonestar Cy-Fair or other LSC colleges- what pre-reqs?

U.S.A. Texas

Published

I'm sorry to post this here, since this is supposed to be for those who are already nurses, but I figured that the Texas forum would get me more answers.

I looked in the course catalog and came up with a plan to take all of my non-nursing classes before applying for the RN program. No biggie. The problem is that in My Records, on my program evaluation, there are a couple of classes, particularly English 1302, a Govt. class, and an extra semester of KINE, that it says need to be completed/planned that are NOT listed in the course catalog. Anyone know about this? Also, my SIL who is doing her pre-reqs, just took English 1302 as a humanities, since it's listed as one for her. I can't find it on my humanities list, and I want to let her know if it's going to be an issue. We both want to be really prepared and done with pre-reqs before we apply, but it seems like we just keep getting conflicting information. :banghead: It's really getting frustrating!

I'm sure I'll end up talking to an advisor, but was wondering if anyone else had run into this and already found out. Thanks!

You need to talk with a advisor at one of the schools to clarify what prerequisites you've completed compared to the ADN degree plan.

Here's the classes my degree plan lists as acceptable for each prereq. Note that I don't see anything about needing a government class, but my plan is based on 2006-2007 catalog, I think:

C) 1: acad

Credits: 27

Complete all 3 subrequirements:

C) A: BIOL

> TAKE BIOL*2401 ENGL*1301 PSYC*2301

C) B: CORE

C) C: SPCH

I was actually coming back here to post what I found out, just in case anyone else had the same issues. I guess you haven't been told either...

Apparently students who have NOT already been accepted into the program have to see an advisor EVERY year to get their Pragram Evaluation in MyRecords updated to the current years catalog. Turns out for some reason mine was showing up under 2002 (not sure why, but it was), one SIL was under 2005, and I'm not sure about the other. I'm frustrated that in my two visits with advisors in the last two months, I wasn't told this, but it is what it is, right? And yes, you have to see an advisor to do this, you canNOT do it yourself, or even with the help of one of the people at the front desk. I found this out after wasting 20 minutes updating my account and essentially going through the entire "application" process over again.

As of this year, GOVT and ENGL 1302, are not requirements, nor is a second semester of KINE. One SIL was also finding info that said MATH 0310 is a pre-req for A&P I, it is not, just MATH 0308 (or test scores that put you above this level).

I feel for one SIL (one who was under 2005), because in her MyRecords account, ENGL 1302 was listed under her options for humanities. She just took it the first summer session, and found out that it will no longer qualify for that criteria. Needless to say, she's not a really happy camper right now.

Fortunately, I came up with a plan based on the actual 2008 catalog, so nothing is changing (as of right now) for me. I just got worried when I saw those requirements in my Program Evaluation.

I hope this helps for someone else out there, since for some reason it's not information given out freely without questions from the student. It's a great school system, just seems to be disorganized, which already adds to the anticipation of trying to do everything to remain competitive for entry into the nursing prgram.:uhoh21: Now, if only I could find out something about my loan status....

That seems like a rather ridiculous way to run a college.

That pretty much sums it up! LOL! My SIL and I both are incredibly frustrated, but at least we know now. Thing is, it's about 5 minutes from my house and supposedly has a really great program. Now I know that I need to make an appointment each year, and if I can't get in before I register, I'll just pick up the latest copy of the catalog. It's just one of probably many obstacles I'll face in my journey to becoming an RN.

I have found that Lonestar college advisors (both financial and academic) are only right about 50% of the time. The other half they give out random bits of mis-information. Obviously their training and supervision is lacking. ALWAYS double check anything a Lonestar college advisor tells you.

Have you gone to the website? It's pretty self-explanatory when you got there. Here's the website for the Lone Star-Cy Fair, you still have time to apply for their spring class, Cy Fair admits 2x a year. And it's based on a point system, so you really need to get A's on Eng 1, A&P 1 and Psycology. Then the more pre-reqs you have the more points you have. Also you can attend their information sessions.

Hope this answers your question.

Thanks, Pinky. That's the information that they have listed in the 2008 Course Catalog, and is what I was using. The problem arose when I looked at my program evaluation and saw additional required courses that weren't listed there or the catalog. It pretty much freaked me out, because I know how competitve the nursing programs are, and I want to make sure that I have all of the courses before I apply. Turns out I'm on an old program and need to have it updated. My SIL was also on an old program and was using it to choose her classes, and as a result has now taken a course that will not apply to the nursing degree plan.

Long story short, I got my answer, but am now leaving these messages as a warning to other students to either have their MyRecords account updated yearly, or to pick up a new course catalog every year to make sure they are still on track based on any new changes that may have been made.
