Collin College ADN Spring 2015

U.S.A. Texas

Published

Hello everyone! I didn't see a thread for Collin College Spring 2015 (July 31 deadline), so I thought I'd start one, especially since there seems to be a whole new point system that they will be implementing for the first time. I plan on trying to apply (also applying here in Sugar Land to WCJC and in Alvin at ACC).

I have a previous degree from Arizona for Computer Science (really doesn't do me much good! lol) but after 9yrs working in IT, I finally admitted that it wasn't fulfilling -took the leap of faith and decided to go back to school to become a nurse. My dream is to one day soon work in home hospice care.

I went to the Collin College nursing info session about a month ago (March 2014) and am taking the PSB exam on Mon May 5. I am not entirely sure how the new point system compares to the old one, but it seems like there are a lot more points involved and I wonder what this means in terms of a the new "minimum" number of points. I know before 16pts was great, 15pts was good and 14pts was iffy to get in. With the new point system, I am aiming for 29 of the 34 max points -we'll see! Does anyone know how that might stack up?

Anyone else trying to apply for Spring 2015?

Hi Michelle,

Were you able to figure out how to work around this issue? I'm trying to register with the codes Charlene sent out but still having a difficult time. I appreciate your input!

Thanks,

Alicia

Alicia,

I have not yet been able to resolve this issue, I am waiting for a return email from Charlene. If I do not hear from her today I will call and see what I can find out. I will let you know if I hear anything from her.

Michelle

I just tried again to register this morning and was successful! Must have been a glitch somewhere.

Hi Michelle,

I was also able to successfully register and purchased my books today. I stopped by the nursing office b/c I received a call from Karla asking me if I was still planning on attending the program. I guess there was a technical glitch of some sort, but I never received the email about the second orientation, which I obviously missed! Luckily, I was able to meet with Ms. Duran and get everything straightened out and Charlene assured me that I'm "good." However, I feel like perhaps there was some crucial information provided during the meeting that I'm missing out on. Would you mind giving me a run down of what was covered--especially if we need to bring anything specific on the first day of class? I did receive Ms. Duran's email w/ the calendar and syllabi that was sent out this afternoon, so I have that information printed and ready go.

I noticed that there are 2 exams scheduled for Thursday of week 1.....was anything mentioned regarding those or the ExamSoft practice test scheduled on Tuesday? Also, are we to wear only regular street attire the first 2 weeks?

I really appreciate any information that you (or anyone else) can provide me. I'm devastated that I did not get to attend this orientation.

Thanks so much!

Alicia

You were not the only one who did not recieve that email. I didn't get it, but it was because they didn't have my correct email address. Someone else who sat by me at the orientation said they had her correct address but still didn't get it. I was lucky to know a couple other girls who are starting the program at the same time and they happened to mention it in passing the week before.

I would love to help you and give you all the info I can. Can you give me your email address? There are a couple attachments that I will send you and I will tell you about all of the FORMS we have to complete and have turned in by the 26th. I think you should be able to PM me through here, or you can look me up on Facebook and friend request me and we can exchange email there. Michelle Graul :)

See you next week!

Thank you so very much Michelle!! I am sending you a friend request on FB now. Thanks again. :D

Okay so here's my story if you guys don't mind giving me some guidance!

I currently work for a pediatric ophthalmologist (for the past 4 years) and a cardiologist before that. I have been going to school on & off since high school, I'm 24 now. I have been seriously been thinking about buckling down and trying to get in to the nursing program at Collin. Unfortunately for me, I have taken many classes but not any science until this semester, I am taking Bio 1406 currently. I intend to take A&P 1 over the summer and A&P2 along with Micro in the fall, apply, get in & be able to start the program in January 2016. Is this even likely? I read online that you must apply by July 31 for spring entry. I will not have all my preqs done by then nor my PSB. Does that mean I would just have to wait & apply that following fall? :(

Thanks in advance! :)

You would have to take both A&P I and A&P II (or A&P I and Micro) over the summer in order to be eligible to apply (then take the remaining pre-req in the fall) - which is doable b/c that's what I did! They give you a couple weeks extension on the deadline to get all your summer grades turned in (but everything else has to be submitted). But you would have to take the PSB before the deadline - sign up soon (spots fill up kinda fast sometimes) & start reviewing! I took the PSB before I had taken any A&P or Micro and got all 6pts. Good luck!

Thank you so much for your response! What do you think helped you score so high the the PSB? Did you buy a certain book or study material? If you dont mind answering these questions - how high was your GPA when you were accepted? Did you make A's in A&P 1&2 & Micro? I have in my mind that I have to have a 4.0, A's in all prereq & score well on the PSB or getting accepted is impossible. Am I right?

For the PSB, the main issue is TIME - you should practice speed reading for the reading/comprehension, spelling, etc parts b/c there is hardly any time to get thru the questions! I think on some of them I answered only HALF the questions - crazy! So be prepared for a major time crunch. For the math, it's easy - again, just try to work quickly; spelling was actually tougher than I expected, but not sure what you can do to prepare for that - the words were so random. For the natural sciences, from what I remember there was a lot of biology, some earth stuff and some chemical/electrical stuff - but focus on biology and you should be ok. There are some websites that have free practice questions, so focus on the topics and not the PSB itself for those.

I had a 4.0 going into the program, all A's in all the prereq's. I don't know if it's impossible to get in w/o A's, but with the new point system, I would aim for A's if you can!

Okay so the new point system is the worst & has me totally freaking out. I have a 3.8 currently & taking Bio 1406, Govnt, and History 1302. Ive taken Pysch 2301, and Humanities none which are honors uhg! The new system says it takes your GPA only on classes related to nursing. Does that include Comp & Statistic (I have taken those as well & scored A's). I plan on taking to PSB in June, A&P over the summer, A&P2 in the fall, apply in Jan 2016 with just those 2 prereqs and taking Micro in the Spring of 2016. I will lose a point for not having completed Micro at the time applying and 4 points for no honors. I guess I could take Pysch 2314 Honors in the fall with A&P2 in hopes to get atleast 1point there. I just don't want to kill myself for something that is just unrealistic. I work fulltime and I have a 6yr old. Im stressing out. On this thread people were getting in with 29 but they had no honors course as did 90% of the applicants im sure. I just wonder if it will still be that way or will more applicants have honors classes. Thanks for your help! -Sarah

Yeah the new point system doesn't count anything other than what's listed (BIOL 1406, A&P I & II, Micro, PSYCH 2301 & 2314), so it wouldn't include Comp & Statistics. If you can, try to take A&P I and Micro in the summer, or A&P II & Micro in the fall - it's manageable to take 2 together! I think there will be more honors in the years to come, but it might still be early to see that many applicants with honors courses, so I think your chances would be good!
