Hello! I have been an LVN for a year now, and will be an RN in December. I will be relocating to the Houston area. I'm worried about the commute of working for an ER in downtown Houston (Ben Taub, Hermann). Does anyone know anything about travel times, etc for work in Houston?

My second option is Conroe Regional, but I can't find anything in the search engine about this hospital. I have researched and found that it recently reclaimed its Trauma III status, and will be working towards Trauma II shortly. How many trauma patients actually come through here? How busy is the ER? etc etc

Thank you all so much!

Please tell us where in "houston" you're going to be in and we'll tell you how your commute to the med. center will be.

Houston is over 300sqmiles- you could be living in Houston and be 2 hours from the med center or 2 minutes depending on what part of the city that you plan to move to.

I am currently employed at Conroe Regional. It is an HCA hospital. We have yet to gain any status as a trauma

center however , it is in the near future. I have also worked at Hermann and Ben Taub. If you are a city person,

looking for excitment ,I say work at Hermann or Ben Taub. If you like the country or " the burbs", work in Conroe or The Woodlands. If you have to comute to The Med Center you are looking at heavy traffic and then you have to park off campus and take the bus to the hospital. In the past few months Conroe has paid generous relocation

packages to some of my co-workers. You might also consider Memorial Hermann in the Woodlands. It is a clean,

well planed communtity, very family oriented, with lots to do. Hope this helps.

Shannon88,

Relax, you may be worrying about something that isn't likely to happen. Ben Taub & (Memorial) Hermann are pretty picky about their ED hires and have no shortage of applicants because they are such outstanding teaching facilities. If you have only been an LVN for a year and will become an RN in Dec, you may not have enough experience to get into a medical center ED.

That being said, take a look at suburban hospitals close to the area in which you will be living. As a previous poster said, Houston is a big place (about the same size as the state of Maryland) and we have plenty to choose from. Life's just too dang short to spend 4 hours a day in traffic!

Welcome to Houston!!! Hope you love it here as much as I do.

Conroe has their new nurses sign a two year contract. Wouldn't do that. I work at Texas Children's, and they are going through the process (almost complete) of becoming a Level 1 trauma center. They hire new grads. It takes a couple years before they will train you as a Trauma nurse, but you can get their eventually.

Thank you all for your help! I'm looking towards north of Houston in the Conroe-Woodlands area. I dont mind a commute if it's for a job I love... but I dont know anything about city traffic!

Does anyone know about the Conroe Regional ICU? Is there just one, or is there MICU and SICU? Maybe even how many beds they have? The hospitals I work out now have between 300-400 beds and I think it's a GREAT compromise between too small and too large.

Have you looked at StLukes in the Woodlands for icu?

They do hearts and craniotomies.

The ICU at Conroe Regional is about 30 beds. One side is ccu and the other is icu. I work in the or , but everyone seems happy and helpful when we come to pick up pt or drop them off. It serves as the main Hospital for the hospital district. You see alot of sick pt so I would think it would be a good learning experience.
