AE MSN at UT Austin Summer 2012

U.S.A. Texas

Published

Anybody out there applying to the UT Austin AEMSN program for summer 2012? Haven't seen any posts about our group of hopefuls yet.

Laflaca, interesting information about the CNS certification. Will you let us know what admissions says about that? I wonder if it means they need time to figure it out. Does that also involve the advanced certification for mental health practitioners (which would affect even more applicants)? Surely they have insiders information and are working on it as we speak. It will be interesting to see how this all works out.

No word on an interview yet.

They probably had a bit of an upfront delay b/c some took their GRE so late, so scores weren't in until mid-Nov. Are they also waiting for the current semester grades?

Well, we will see!

Here is the list of certifications that will be added and retired in 2013-2014. Info is from ANCC's website FAQ's:

-------------

10. What will the new certifications be and when will they launch?

As a result of the APRN Consensus Model implementation in 2015, ANCC will be creating new certifications to meet the role and/or population foci requirements. Planning for these certifications is under way, and we are pleased to announce the expected launch of:

  • Adult-Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner [expected launch 2013]
  • Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner [expected launch 2013]
  • Adult-Gerontology Clinical Nurse Specialist (across the continuum from wellness through acute care)[expected launch 2014]

11. Which certifications will be retired and when?

The certifications listed below will be retired when their current National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) accreditation period expires in 2014. Retiring certifications are:

  • Acute Care Nurse Practitioner
  • Adult Nurse Practitioner
  • Adult Psychiatric & Mental Health Nurse Practitioner
  • Gerontological Nurse Practitioner
  • Adult Health Clinical Nurse Specialist
  • Adult Psychiatric & Mental Health Clinical Nurse Specialist
  • Child/Adolescent Psychiatric & Mental Health Clinical Nurse Specialist
  • Gerontological Clinical Nurse Specialist return to top

The others are unchanged, it says.

I did hear back from a member of the faculty at UT (a graduate adviser, we're not supposed to post names here right?) and got a pretty generic statement: "I am pleased to hear of your interest in our AE CNS track. We have revised our curriculum and the AH CNS program includes require content in gerontology. If you have further questions, you may contact the program director..." Nothing about whether they might have the acute care gerontology NP, or the primary care gerontology NP, or for sure only the CNS, or whether there will be other options.

Unfortunately, I'm not wanting to lock in to gerontology specifically. UT may become a nonstarter for me, which is too bad because I love living in Austin. Guess we'll see...

Yes, but it sounds like all of the programs out there will need to be evolving to suit the new certifications, right? I'm still not sure I fully understand it all, but at least we can be somewhat prepared for this type of discussion at the interview.

Received my invite for an interview yesterday afternoon. I'll go next week on Wednesday--looks like with a single professor. And I thought I was nervous just waiting for the e-mail! I'll think I'll show up confident, although we'll see, after what are sure to be 6 sleepless nights...

I guess we are still officially competing for a few cherished spots, but I'll post anything helpful that I take away from the interview. I hope that anyone who interviews before then would do the same.

Good luck y'all!

Got my invite too. Problem is, I have all my finals next week. I hope doing it closer to the interview deadline won't affect my chances....

Thanks, please post your experience...I'm so scared of getting caught off guard. I better start thinking about what to say...

Don't feel intimidated. They're all really nice. Just talk about why nursing, why you want to go into the track you chose, etc. Trust me: The professors are not about to ask "gotcha" questions :)

Yikes....no invite here (yet). It was by email?

update: have obsessively checked through trash, junk mail, and inbox three times. Nada. Current strategy is to stop thinking about it and hope for the best!

I haven't heard back either. I spoke with one of the program coordinators and she said that it's fine -- she is hoping that faculty will contact students within the next two weeks but that it also might not be until January. It sounds like professors will be the ones sending out invites based on how quickly they get through their set of applications. I could be wrong, but based off of the email I got, that's what it sounds like.

Yeah my email was from a prof.

And thanks for the encouragement samian.
