50k sign-on bonus

U.S.A. Texas

Published

I received an invitation letter from one of the hosp in Mc Allen, Texas offering a $50k sign-on bonus in exchage of working there for 4 years. It sounds like a good deal, a very good one, indeed. I emailed the HR dept and they confirmed the authenticity of the letter. But, I wonder if there is a catch with that. Have you heard of this? Any nurses out there who took this offer? I want to know your side of the story.

With my husband and me, we'll be having a 100k in our bank account, isn't that tempting?

Looks like it will be hot and dry--given how far south it is. (Can't get much further south.)

The humidity is oppressive! You got the hot right, though.

I worked a travel assignment on a med-surg unit in nearby Brownsville several years ago. There were 2 RNs & 1 NA for the 24 beds. With discharges & admissions, some days I had 15 or more patients. Nearly all paperwork was done after giving report to the next shift (12 hrs, no less!!) So I raked in the OT on that one. :imbar

Speaking Spanish is definitely essential to working in that area. I learned a lot while in that area, but proficiency in the language would have certainly made it easier to provide quality nursing care.

I forgot to mention, on top of that there is a $24,000 relocation allowance. And, I asked about what will happen if I am not happy and will leave the facility before the contract ends. They have a 2-year contract = $25k.

I am a nurse from the Phils. and I am very interested to work and live in Texas. Think, Mcallen is a nice place.

Thanks for your inputs. Will try to assess and weigh my options coz until now, after passing all exams--NCLEX, CGFNS and IELTS, I still have no employer or agency to help me.

Specializes in Nephrology, Cardiology, ER, ICU.

ohmy. thanks! :stone I am really hoping to get a hospital who can sponsor me immediately. I'll do my surfing. Thanks.

I can say that McAllen is on the border with Mexico. It is way out in the middle of Nowhere, Texas.

Per other nurses, there is a lot of work there for OB as Mexican nationals cross the border to bear American Citizens.

That is the sum total of my experience. Except that there are a lot of travel assignments to this area.

i heard about that position because one of my co-nurses in nc went there.i was just not so sure about how long it would take until he gets it.but it's really $50,000. of course, he was encouraging us to follow him.i heard that it's in the border already of mexico.i instead went here in new england and relocation is like $5,000 and sign on is from $10,000 up for a year.

Specializes in OR Internship starting in Jan!!.

If it were me, I'd at least look into it. Yes, there are some challenges, but that's too be expected if they are offering a bonus like that. Personally, I love Texas weather. And border towns are great for a bit of fun! heh

Best of luck!

PS -- if you are not familiar with the climate, you might want to wait to visit until July, so you can get a feel for how hot is really is in Texas. I live in Dallas, and it was 88 degrees at 6pm yesterday.

I would love to get that hospital information from you.I have not been able to find any hospitals offering that much.Any one know of any huge bonus offers in Texas ?
