UMemphis vs. UTHSC

U.S.A. Tennessee

I'm looking for some opinions of the BSN programs at U. Memphis and UTHSC. I will be a 2nd degree BSN student - finishing up my prereqs now and will be ready to start in the summer/fall. I'm leaning toward UTHSC because I get the impression they have a better reputation and seem to have good relationships with local hospitals, but I am already a student at UofM and it would probably be easier to slide into their program.

My biggest issue is going to be financial aid. I have maxed out my federal undergrad loan $$ so I will need some combination of scholarship, employer tuition assistance (I've been applying for jobs at Le Bonheur but haven't heard anything), and private loans. I think the program costs at both schools are comparable. My end goal is to be a NP, don't know yet if I'll go into a DNP program or MSN.

Thanks for any insight you can give!

I go to U of M and I love it. You mention that UTHSC has a good reputation, but I think U of M graduates are the most sought after and that didn;t just come from my professors.

If you want to be a NP and U of M has a deal where if you have a 3.0 in your last semester you can automatically be accepted in the MSN program without competing with the other applicants if you agree to start immediately.

I haven't had much issue with U of M, they have the same issues every other school has and I feel like they gave us a good education

Feel free to PM me.

I also go to the U of M, and I feel like I have received a great education. The only thing I would say about UTHSC is that their BSN program is relatively new, while the LSON program at U of M is well established. Plus, since you already go to the U of M, it would probably be easier on you if you stayed there. I will graduate in a couple of weeks, and all I've heard from recruiters is that we are highly sought after as graduates because the area hospitals know that our program is a good one. That's not to say that UTHSC isn't good. I just don't really know that much about them. Good luck!

Hey, Jayfer! Are you excited as I am to be graduating in three weeks?

Thank you! I'm going to check out the school this Thursday and I"m excited about it.

I'm a senior at UTHSC-stick with Uof M....what really matters more than rankings are NCLEX pass rates. Go to the state Board of Nursing websites for each school that you are interested in and evaluate those rates. Rankings can be political. UTHSC is making program changes and the instruction is suffering...along with the students.
