Roane State, Nursing Program, Anyone waiting on a letter for 2011?

U.S.A. Tennessee

Published

Just wondering if there was anyone else out there has applied at Roane State (Nursing Program)? I'm currently in waiting...hoping to get the letter saying I start in the Fall! The closer it gets the more anxious I am getting.

Hi everyone! I'm a current nursing student at Roane State. I remember feeling just like you guys! All the waiting, then the anticipation to start classes- it can wear you out! Nursing school has been the hardest, most exciting, rewarding thing I have ever done. Make sure you relax and enjoy your summer, I spent so much time last summer trying to learn what I could for nursing school, when I should have been RELAXING. Once you start school, it will be hard to make time for yourself.

If you have any questions feel free to message me.

Those who werent accepted -DONT GIVE UP! If you feel that nursing is where you were called to be, keep trying, apply to the other nursing schools, I have heard great things about the other schools as well. :heartbeat

Dreams2BeRN,

Hey, I will be attending Roane State nursing program this fall - thanks for the advice. I was just wondering what your hardest thing was this year?

I would like to know that as well!! i've heard PHARM is horrible. people have me freakin out over it lol. I just know its gonna take lots of study time!

I too will be attending Roane State in the Fall :yelclap:- hoping for the Knox Co. Campus.

I could probably sit down with you (Dreams2BeRN) and ask you questions for hours - lol.

I have looked at our required textbook list, but are there any books you would recommend? Also, how many days a week are you in class, lab, clinicals during your first semester.

Any and all helpful tips would be sooo helpful.

have you looked at the bundle they have? do you know if that is just for Nursing Fund. or does it include the pharm books too?

Pharm is separate but if you add that class to the course list it will add - best I remember it is two books. There are also recommended drug books too. Did that list make your head spin - I think mine is still spinning - lol.

The hardest thing for me (I am a kinetic learner) was the reading. But it is sooo important, make sure to read the chapters prior to the next class. It helps to be familiar with the information before they go over it in lecture. I found that I had to set a time for reading. Read for 20 minutes, think about what you read, take 5 minutes away from the book, then come back. Another thing I promised myself and should have stuck to since the very beginning- DO NOT CHANGE YOUR ANSWERS. Yes sometimes I have changed for the better, but MOST of the time it was for the worst! -Recently realized that from the last 2 tests in which my letter grade would have been different had I left them alone.

Pharm was not too bad, I made lots of note cards. The instructor I had, had lots of ways to remember the drugs. I actually did better in pharm than foundations. Don't let anyone scare you about the classes, if you put in the effort, stay positive, and give it 110% you will do just fine!

The instructors I had truly wanted us to do well. I consider them cheerleaders, so dont be afraid to talk to them. They WANT to help. I'm just sad we wont have them next semester.

The best advice I can give is: READ, ASK questions if you dont understand something, DONT change answers, pay close attention in lab -and practice those skills, step out of your comfort zone in clinicals (if you are anything like me that is where you will learn the most) If you are not used to being on your feet for hours at a time (~4 hours) get some comfortable shoes, and get a good care plan book -I have Sparks and Taylors Nursing Diagnosis manual..

Thats all I can think of right now, if I think of anything else I will post it.

:yeah:Congratulations! You are on your way to becoming a nurse!!! WOO HOO!:yeah:

yes i have heard about the tests where they put multiple answers that they are all very very similar. so they said you really need to know your stuff and the situation well. i'm nervous and excited. thanks for the tips!

oh yeah how do clinicals work? i mean we go to class 3 days, do they assign a certain day? or do we do them everyday ? and do they have a summer schedule for nursing or are you just off for those months?

The tests do have multiple right answers, and you have to pick the "most right" answer. One thing I learned on the tests is, if the question asks what to do first and one of the answers says "Assess" PICK IT. You will learn ( I am still learning) how to weed out irrelevant info to find out what the question is really asking. The tests have gotten harder and we are getting more of the "select all that apply" questions. UGH...I say that, but I have learned soooo much!!! All the nurses I have talked to who have graduated from Roane State said that they were more than prepared when it came to the boards.

This is how we started: Foundations and Pharm Mondays and Fridays, and Lab on Thursdays (8-2:00). A few weeks later we started clinicals, which mine were on Wednesdays (8-2:00) I believe we were assigned this day, and we found out at the second orientation in August. The day before clinicals you will go to the hospital and pick up your assignment for preplanning. - Preplanning is getting information about your patient to formulate a care plan.

We are off during the summer. But the hospitals give opportunities for externship positions.

One book I would def recommend is Sparks and Taylors Nursing diagnosis manual- it took hours off care plans. The books that are required for class are good, make sure to make use of the CD, and online resources that come with them. If I think of anything else I will post it...

mom2ccb, I am happy to answer any questions you have!

One other thing I forgot to mention that is VERY important, and that is to truly care for your patients. These are human beings that would rather be in the comfort of their own home, but are in the hospital, and the care they recieve from you may make their day!

Hey Dreams2BeRN,

I was just wondering what campus you attended.

Thanks
