  1. Hi! I havent forgotten the notes. im trying to figure out how to get you the notes. I havent poted enough comments to send a private message. If you can send me a private message and maybe I can send them that way! Sorry it's been so long..been super busy. I hope you're having a relaxing summer!
  2. H!! Congratulations to you all!!! I know how excited and anxious you feel right now. Be proud of yourselves, it is not easy to get into the program. Be sure to enjoy and rest during summer. Try not to worry about studying up on anything, you will have enough when classes start. It is a hard program, but the instructors at Roane State care about your success and are there to help you. It would be a good idea if you guys could keep in touch with each other and meet in the 1st or 2nd orientation. It's really nice to have some people semi familiar around especially when it comes time to start reading and studying the info. Sometimes even after reading others may have picked up on something in the text you didn't and you may have picked up on something they didn't! Just always remember to try your hardest, ask for help when you need it, and never be afraid to ask questions!!! I am also here to help if possible. I graduated last May, found out I was pregnant June, took NCLEX in October, baby born Jan. 31, so I never started working anywhere. I've been home with the little one, so I am home and can check emails and allnurses. I'll be looking for notes that I can send that may be helpful. Congrats to you all!! You are going to be nurses before you know it!!!
  3. The tests do have multiple right answers, and you have to pick the "most right" answer. One thing I learned on the tests is, if the question asks what to do first and one of the answers says "Assess" PICK IT. You will learn ( I am still learning) how to weed out irrelevant info to find out what the question is really asking. The tests have gotten harder and we are getting more of the "select all that apply" questions. UGH...I say that, but I have learned soooo much!!! All the nurses I have talked to who have graduated from Roane State said that they were more than prepared when it came to the boards. This is how we started: Foundations and Pharm Mondays and Fridays, and Lab on Thursdays (8-2:00). A few weeks later we started clinicals, which mine were on Wednesdays (8-2:00) I believe we were assigned this day, and we found out at the second orientation in August. The day before clinicals you will go to the hospital and pick up your assignment for preplanning. - Preplanning is getting information about your patient to formulate a care plan. We are off during the summer. But the hospitals give opportunities for externship positions. One book I would def recommend is Sparks and Taylors Nursing diagnosis manual- it took hours off care plans. The books that are required for class are good, make sure to make use of the CD, and online resources that come with them. If I think of anything else I will post it... mom2ccb, I am happy to answer any questions you have! One other thing I forgot to mention that is VERY important, and that is to truly care for your patients. These are human beings that would rather be in the comfort of their own home, but are in the hospital, and the care they recieve from you may make their day! 1 Corinthians 13 "Love cures people, the ones who give it and the ones who recieve it." H.L. Mencken
  4. The hardest thing for me (I am a kinetic learner) was the reading. But it is sooo important, make sure to read the chapters prior to the next class. It helps to be familiar with the information before they go over it in lecture. I found that I had to set a time for reading. Read for 20 minutes, think about what you read, take 5 minutes away from the book, then come back. Another thing I promised myself and should have stuck to since the very beginning- DO NOT CHANGE YOUR ANSWERS. Yes sometimes I have changed for the better, but MOST of the time it was for the worst! -Recently realized that from the last 2 tests in which my letter grade would have been different had I left them alone. Pharm was not too bad, I made lots of note cards. The instructor I had, had lots of ways to remember the drugs. I actually did better in pharm than foundations. Don't let anyone scare you about the classes, if you put in the effort, stay positive, and give it 110% you will do just fine! The instructors I had truly wanted us to do well. I consider them cheerleaders, so dont be afraid to talk to them. They WANT to help. I'm just sad we wont have them next semester. The best advice I can give is: READ, ASK questions if you dont understand something, DONT change answers, pay close attention in lab -and practice those skills, step out of your comfort zone in clinicals (if you are anything like me that is where you will learn the most) If you are not used to being on your feet for hours at a time (~4 hours) get some comfortable shoes, and get a good care plan book -I have Sparks and Taylors Nursing Diagnosis manual.. Thats all I can think of right now, if I think of anything else I will post it. :yeah:Congratulations! You are on your way to becoming a nurse!!! WOO HOO!
  5. Hi everyone! I'm a current nursing student at Roane State. I remember feeling just like you guys! All the waiting, then the anticipation to start classes- it can wear you out! Nursing school has been the hardest, most exciting, rewarding thing I have ever done. Make sure you relax and enjoy your summer, I spent so much time last summer trying to learn what I could for nursing school, when I should have been RELAXING. Once you start school, it will be hard to make time for yourself. If you have any questions feel free to message me. Those who werent accepted -DONT GIVE UP! If you feel that nursing is where you were called to be, keep trying, apply to the other nursing schools, I have heard great things about the other schools as well. :heartbeat
  6. i have been a patient many times, and remember having many wonderful nurses which inspired me to become one myself. i have wished that i could thank them in someway...what better way than to thank all you nurses that work hard everyday! happy nurses week!!!:redbeathe thank you to the nurses who hold our hand when we are scared! thank you to the nurses who stay with us later than you have to! thank yoo to the nurses who brought us toys just to see us smile! thank you to the nurses that take the time to ask if we want grape juice (even when we have already had 20) thank you to the nurses who wipe the tears from our face! thank you to the nurses who answered their calling with a compassionate and willing heart, even when the work is hard! i can go on all day! all i can say is....:redbeathe thank you!!!:redbeathe:hug:
  7. :hug:Please do not give up on yourself or your dreams! First thing, take care of yourself, don't let any of those negative thoughts get to you, and don't let anything or anyone get in your way of doing what you want! You are not a loser and you can pass your classes! You were doing good in the beginning you can do it again. Surround yourself with family and friends when you are feeling this way -You need alot of love and encouragement right now. Try to remember why you were excited about nursing school and why you wanted to be a nurse in the beginning, hopefully it will reignite the feelings you once had. I will say a prayer for you. This song brings me up when I am down....
  8. Thank you for your replies!!! Stellagirl, it is nice to find someone in the same boat. I am finishing up my last couple of classes, and will be starting Nursing School in August. I can't imagine how excited you are to be starting in a month! Good luck in starting your journey!!!
  9. :redbeatheHi! I was just wondering if there were any nurses or nursing students who have pacemakers? Are there any specific things that you cannot do? I know working around an MRI is out of the question, but since I have not worked in a hospital before wasn't sure if there was anything else. Thank you!!!
  10. That would be fine! I have no idea how to send a message or how to recieve one (I havent had one before):nuke: I am extremely nervous & anxious about the letter, I am just not wanting to get my hopes up! I can't imagine what it would feel like to get an acceptance letter or how bad it would feel to get a letter of denial...UGH:no: Do you happen to know how they place the students? -like what campus we would be taking the nursing classes... I live really close to the Knox county campus if I get in, it would be very convenient.
  11. I am taking it at the Oak Ridge campus. What campus are you at?
  12. Hi! I am waiting for Roane State also! I am finishing with Developmental Psych and Micro now, both are actually fun and interesting. Don't stress too much about not having some classes done, from what I have read many people have been accepted in the past with the bare minimum hours. That's what is keeping my hopes alive!
  13. An offensive odor is exactly that -OFFENSIVE. It is a known fact that if we don't bathe or wear deodorant we will STINK.....offensively. Regardless if it is someone of "another culture", if someone does not practice the same hygiene that the majority of us do....they will stink...and offend others. Maybe the point of her mentioning that the person was of another culture was the fact that it may be a very sensitive area especially when it comes to one's beliefs. Of course it would be a sensitive area with anyone, but, there may be some friction when it comes to someone else confronting him about it. If I were you I would talk to the instructor, let her deal with it. I'm sure she has noticed and others have already said something, you won't be the only one. It is true if something isn't done about it now he will be confronted later. If I was a patient and a nurse came into my room smelling that bad, I wouldn't want them to care for me, I would be wondering when the last time they washed their hands... To me... stink=dirt=germs UGH:barf02:
