I worked at the VA as a nursing assistant/extern/etc or whatever they or anyone else called it. I enjoyed working with the people and the patients were an interesting bunch. Some were great and others were an interesting challenge. However, because they were inflexible w/ my school schedule, I had to resign. I doubt I'd go back when I graduate though. It was not my cup of tea.
I would suggest going there in the day time and talking to a few nurses on different floors and on different shifts to get an idea.
It is no more dangerous than any other part of the city. There used to be a large public housing project across the street on Poplar but that has been torn down. VA security is very good, they are federal officers, armed and visible. They have a dedicated lot for parking, it is when you park on the street that I have heard of break ins. I would not let the security aspects deter you from applying.
There are several hospitals in the downtown/midtown area, as well as Baptist and UT schools. The VA probably has the best security, since they have both security and federal officers. I am doing one of my rotations there, and I have never felt in danger at any time. During the day there are TONS of people down there. I'm not sure about night, but I think there is security at all the hospitals.

Does anyone have anything good or bad to say about the place. I would like to someday work for the FedGov again since I already have 7 years civil service time.
