Teas V Science and Math?

Nursing Students TEAS

Published

Hello everyone,

I am planning to take the teas in late july and started studying in sections. I have already covered the reading and language section. They are the easiest to me because I am the strongest in those subjects. I am in the science section now and im having trouble retaining the information. I use the ati manual along with some of the princeton nursing school tests guide, the teas crash course, and a complete idiots guide to nursing school exams. i have split it up where i memorize anantomy for two weeks then go on to the other sections. My questions are:

How did you study for the teas math and science section? Was there a specific method you tried?

How long did you study for each section?

What was your score for math and science.

Thank you for anyone who chimed in. Im just really nervous I may not be studying the right way and when its time to take the test, I dont get questions right and have to retake it.

How much of the test is Algebra? Im pretty good with the basic math but algebra and geometry is a beast for me. Will studying from the book be enough? Thanks everyone

SU2013,

If you acknowledge that algebra and geometry are difficult for you then study for those even harder. Keep in mind that there are only 30 questions in the math section so you don't want to risk missing even two algebra questions. Just consider hypothetically that you encounter two algebra questions and two geometry questions... if you miss all four because you have no idea how to solve them then immediately you are down to 26/30 = 86.7%. I recommend that you do as many practice math problems as you possibly can until you feel confident.

If you can purchase the online practice tests do it. They are harder than the actual test but will prepare you very well. I was scoring in the 70s on the online practice tests and scored 92.7 on the real deal. Good luck!

I agree with keylimesqueez. The ATI online tests are quite difficult but they did help me to better prepare. They seem expensive to me but I suppose it was worth it. The science section on the online tests were brutal. I thought for sure that I was going to fail the science section on the actual TEAS. But, after all the preparation and studying I actually scored best in the science section.

I am a bit suprised more people do not have problems with the reading and grammar sections as well. I swear with age and technology my grammer and vocabulary/spelling has deteriorated. Most people probably use spelling and grammar aids which I believe make our brains weaker in these areas. Am I the only one that struggles with simple words like recommendation, assessment, courteous, etc? Or what about capitalization rules. I had to really dig and relearn a lot of the grammar stuff. Prior to TEAS preparation, I had no memory of complex, compound, and simple sentences. The ATI study manual serves well for these areas because of the explanations to the problems.

To summarize, the ATI Study Manual really should be enough to at least pass the exam if studied and learned- not memorize. I think some students use the ATI manual to "gauge" themselves but then do not really go back and thouroughly examine what they missed and why they missed them. I have seen some post that indicate how much better they scored on retaking the test. This is not learning; this is memorization. Anyone that thinks simply retaking the exact same test prepares them for the TEAS is in for a rude awakening. Sure, maybe some of the questions from the practice test will be on the actual test... maybe. Why leave it to chance? I bought three different books and both online practice exams. Why? Because I wanted every single angle of questions to reveal my weaknesses. With the exception of math, my scores would literally go from a 92% to a 70%. The reason is because some practice tests hit my weaker areas than others. Overall, it took repetition... not to memorize, but to continue narrowing my field of weak areas.

Sorry this was such a long-winded post. I am taking the time to write all this TEAS stuff because I know exactly how it feels. It is downright scary and anxiety runs very high for many of us.

Sincerely,

LW
