NICU RN to CRNA?

Nursing Students SRNA

Published

I am currently a NICU nurse considering CRNA school. I work in a level 3 NICU and deal a lot with vents, drips, lines etc. I also recently joined the transport team where I have had the opportunity to intubate, place umbilical lines, and perform other procedures most nurses are not allowed to do. My undergraduate GPA is a 4.0 and I have yet to take the GRE. I would just like to know my chances in getting in considering I dont have experience with adult critical care. Any information/advice is appreciated!

Below is a post from an earlier thread. Hope this helps. Originally posted yesterday by SOMEI

"I am in my second year of CRNA school, and my primary critical care experience is NICU (10 yrs). However, at the time I applied to the program I was working in an adult ICU (1 yr with adults before starting school).

I also found that I was the only one in my class that had a clue about pediatrics/OB (who carry their own set of high risks for anesthesia).

I definitely found my adult experience to be helpful. I also believe my NICU experience along with the fact that I stepped out of my "comfort zone" to do adults was an asset during my interview. Let's face it, sometimes the "comfort zone" is shaken up a bit and be able to readily adapt and think on your feet is key in providing anesthesia.

I don't know if you will get in based on your NICU experience alone. However, I do know it is an asset and that you want to "stand out" in your interview from those beside you. Everyone will have outstanding grades in undergrad, since it is a requirement, as well as critical care experience. You want to show what YOU will also bring to the program.

Good Luck!!! :)"

MHP483,

Hi, I am also interested in a transport team position like yours. Where do you work? Are you an NNP? How much NICU exp. did you need for your position? Can you PM me?

You can do it with NICU experience only!!! I Am a NICU RN and I will graduate from CRNA school in December. You just need to call the schools that you are interested in and ask them if your experience in enough.

No, I'm not an NNP...I just had to have special training and successfully perform certain skills. I had 2 1/2 years of experience when I was asked to join the team. Our hospital is the only level 3 NICU in the area, so we are responsible for picking up sick babies from all surrounding hospitals. Its only you and an RT in the field so you have to be very comfortable with your skills. It is very challenging, but also very rewarding! Hope this helps. :)
