Has anybody heard of Sumner College of Health Science? It looks like a new program.

looks like alot of online coursework. did you notice the 62,000 tuition?

"Sumner College of Health Sciences has now received ELIGIBILITY status from the Council on Accreditation of the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists and completed an onsite visit. We will now have an opportunity to address the recommendations and suggestions made by the visiting committee. The COA has set up a meeting for May 2008. It is that meeting that will determine our opening date. We will take applications and process them, although we cannot accept students into the program until SCHS is notified by the AANA,COA.

For starters, this program has not recieved accreditation yet and they demand a $3,500 NON REFUNDABLE deposit for a "clinical placement" guarantee- without any information of where this nebulus clinical site might be. The NBCRNA requires specific case hours/types for applicants to sit for boards, and this program makes a simple statement that "If a clinical site does not have all the required experiences, students will be rotated (for the time it takes to complete the cases) to a clinical site that provides that training." So, does this mean that after two years, I would have to rotate to one of my fellow students sites for a couple of months if I didn't get a complete experience at my own? What if I'm in California, and the school wants to send me to Maine to finish?

There are some serious concerns I have with the ability of any program to run an anesthesia program online that would lead me as an SRNA to run, not walk, from this program. Although there are some courses that could be completed online, the core anesthesia courses would need many hours of face time with faculty and discussion with other students to be assured I was getting value for dollar education.

So, to sum up- No sir, I don't like it.

i find this prospective program suspect as well. i'm also wondering, though...

has anyone heard ANYTHING about the prospects for a traditional CRNA program in colorado, at UCHSC or elsewhere? are there any plans, considerations, etc.? even if you have heard that there are no plans and there will not be a program here for a long long time, this would be very helpful for me to know. i am trying to decide what to do as far as relocating if there is not a CRNA program implemented at CU or elsewhere in the next few years...

This program is pricey. I am skeptical about this program, especially about the clinical placement "guarantee" fee of $3500. It also looks as if the students are responsible for attaining their own clinical site. If anyone applies before the program gets accredited by AANA they are out minimum $45, especially if AANA does not accredit the school.

Hello, I just wanted to clarify a couple of points. First, let me start by saying that not ever program fits the needs of all individuals. Sumner looks to provide opportunity to those that desire a more online atmosphere. Second, the $3500 fee, according to the website is merely to hold your spot once accepted, not a pre-acceptance application fee.

Please do not take this as I am trying to prove someone wrong, but rather make sure that it is not being misunderstood. One of the biggest concerns with SRNA's is the placement in clinical sites and thus it is good that the issue is being raised from the beginning.

Sounds like a GREAT opportunity. I am many years away from CRNA school, but I do plan to become a CRNA eventually. I am keeping my eye on this program. By the time I'm ready to apply, hopefully there will be a reputation whether good/bad which can help influence my decision on where to apply. Based on what I've researched, the tuition is relatively comparable to some other programs, although there are many that are less expensive. Keep in mind the fee quoted is EVERYTHING, travel, books, everything. Looks like an awesome program and I'd like to keep the thread going with updated information along with people's experiences!
