Is Med surg experience accepted for CRNA?

Hi Is med surg experience in an acute setting accepted for the CRNA programme and if you got your BSN online does it have any effect on being accepted to the programme? i know Kaiser has school of anesthesia in CA do they pay for your schooling to be a CRNA if you are an employee?

I know that Kaiser is getting more strict in terms of needing ICU experience(even over ER). In the orientation session they stated that even as recent as last year they accepted ER experience, but that this year they would not. I know of at least 2 people that have been accepted into the program for Fall 2006 with less than 1 yr experience...so get yourself into ICU asap! Anesthesia requires a lot of iv drug administration and ventilator experience that I don't think med surg floors have...in terms of paying for school if you work for Kaiser after...I heard that if you work for a Kaiser in Northern CAlifornia after school, they will pay...but not really sure.....

If I only had med-surg experience, CRNA school would scare the sh!t out of me. It does already but at least I know how a vent works, invasive monitoring etc. Admitting med-surg nurses would be setting them up for failure.

What school are in ?

It scares me how little research some people do before they start asking questions about a profession that they claim to love!!! Sorry for the soap box but it had to be said.

Specializes in ICU, oncology/organ transplant.

Brian,

Isn't the point of a pre-inquiry forum so that people can ask questions???

Sometimes I don't even bother posting questions because people are so judgemental. And I don't recall the poster stating that she loved the profession????

I must say i am with you on this one Brian. I do think sometimes people can come on a little strong on here, but sometimes it is deserved.

Hey Brian, how do things look for CRNA's up there? I am thinking of moving that way after graduation. I am actually going to be there vacationing in August after school breaks. Any info would be appreciated!

Uhhh... isn't the original poster doing research right now by virtue of asking the question in this forum?

I don't understand that response at all.

Tatty,

Answer 1: At competitive schools your med surge experience will be an easy way for them to weed you out from the get go. However, if you apply to a school that only has 30 applicants and wants to accept 15, then your chances are better and I know two people who were accepted with only tele experience.

Answer 2: Lots of people have been accepted after getting their online BSN's.

Also, lets be nice to the newbies. Sometimes they just don't see the sticky and are excited to ask questions or get a chance to talk.
