I've realized that I have to retake a course. Did both grades (W and passing grade) apply towards your GPA when you were applying? Or only the passing grade?

I think every school is different. the best bet is to contact the schools that you are interested in.

You have to find out the policies for your school. These might be printed out in the schedule of classes excerpts from the college catalog.

I've honestly never heard of a "W" being factored into a GPA. What point value is it worth in GPA calculations? You'll have to find that out from the school you took the course at if that's the case. Typically a "W" doesn't count for or against you in GPA calculations, but it DOES show up on your transcript. I have a few on mine. Be prepared to explain to a grad school admission panel why you withdrew. I interviewed at two nurse anesthesia programs and was accepted to both--neither of them asked about mine. There were more compelling things about my application to discuss.
