I posted this over in the Pre-CRNA inquiry section, but I will repost here for hopes of a response/some insight....

I am about to pursue my BSN with intent to go to CRNA school upon finishing. I am currently an ADN working in critical care. My question is this...

Tomorrow I will be filing a Chapter 13. In 4.5 years I will be free and clear of all debts except my house. Will it be possible for me to get through CRNA school on federal loans alone? I am deciding between UAB and the Gooding Institute in Panama City for attendance, both of which don't seem to be very expensive schools. I understand there are living expenses associated with maintaining two households...but has anyone here ever made it without private loans and Tuition Answer loans, etc., through CRNA school?

I would hate to know that due to financial circumstances beyond my control that this could potentially be a dream deferred. :crying2:

Start saving now....

It looks like you still have several years before you will even be applying to CRNA school, so my advice to you is save as much money as you can between now and then. Unless you are independently wealthy or have a bundle of money in savings, I think it would be VERY difficult to get by on just federal loans. Maybe there have been people who have done it, but I am not one of them.....it would be interesting to hear from those who have. My federal loans didn't even pay for the entire cost of my program....let alone all my living expenses, car payment and extra stuff along the way. Do you have a home you could take out a second mortgage on? I know some students do that. Best of luck to you!!

You could also apply for the Army's CRNA program. Your entire tuition is covered and you get a decent salary (including medical & dental coverage for you and your family) while in school. Once you're done, you owe the Army 4 1/2 years on active duty. Not a bad deal. Good luck.

Hi,

I would think about postponing school personally. Also, do yourself a favor and evaluate how got into debt. For experience, I have a problem with debt which I thought I could correct by making Big money. 2 yrs of private and public GSLs, our retirement accounts, and money from parents estate... and asked to leave NA school near the end? My loans are coming due, creditors are calling, paying for the basics is almost possible.. Sure, my attrition from school is of the minority of the stats, but you don't what to go down this road. Take care of your debt, start saving, and evaluate financial and personal issues before going to school. The loans go fast and you don't want to lose your house.

Yes, you can apply and be accepted into the Army after filing bankruptcy. They look at each situation idividually. they prefer that you are at least a year or two post-filing before entering. I know someone who was accepted after filing.

you may want to check on the ability to take out student loans once you have delcared bankruptcy....i wasn't aware that you would still be eligible.....

Save...save....save....one other commentor had it right...your a bit away from applying...in 4.5 years you could save up enough to do it...live cheap...extremely cheap!!!

You cannot be denied federal student aid for credit reasons. If you have any more specific questions, go to FAFSA's web site and you can chat live or enail someone. they are very helpful. Good luck!!
