Hello, I would like to get an idea of CRNA programs that accept ER experience. I am willing to relocate whatever it takes. Thanks for your help

Cary,

The overwhelming majority do not accept ER experience as "critical care." However, depending on the trauma rating of your ER, number of years of experience etc., etc. you might be able to milk it. One you might look into is the one in Charleston, WV ( the first deadline is past but there is a second chance deadline in FEB '08 to start May '08). But the best advice is to spend some time in the ICU titrating drips, dealing with vents, learning how to anticipate courses of action based on ICU protocols, and getting a feel how these patients are managed by Intensivists. A year would be adequate. Meanwhile, get your best GRE score, line up your references, and research past posts on this site to get your mind on right for application/interview. I am starting at U. of Cincinnati Fall '08 and got in with a little over one yr. ICU at application--the school is ranked #10 and the director is the current president of the AANA. Chances are you're not that far off if you have decent grades etc.--I am quite sure ER experience will help you stand above other applicants with just the minimum ICU time most schools require, but it won't replace ICU time for the most part.

Check out the Charleston Area program I think they may take the right kind of ER experience.

Beedog is right. Most programs do not accept ER. Some will look at it if it's a Level I ED but that's about it. They still want you to have ICU as well though. Have you ever had any ICU experience?

Case Western in Cleveland accepts ER experience. They are one of the top schools in the country. They also accept peds ICU and neonatal ICU, flight nurses, a huge variety. I am in their program and they really look at the whole package. There is no set criteria. ER experience does count. So give it a shot! Good luck!!

When I was applying to schools, all of them listed ER as unacceptable experience when referring to the critical care requirements.
