Any advice for a NP student trying to find a job prn as a RN? I was recently laid off from a job I enjoyed. It fit perfectly with my school and clinical hours. Now I'm on unemployment. The jobs where I get offers are for much less money. It seems I am taking 5 steps back in my nursing career. There are lots of great opportunities, but they are for full time, and the positions don't work with my school schedule.

Oh, FYI, I had a government contract position, and the whole department was let go from government cut backs.

On the bright side, I graduate in May, 2015!

What advice are you looking for? You don't say what field or even what city or state you are located in, or what area you have experience in.

I have lots of experience in family care clinics, triage nursing, and in Tele nursing. My background also includes being a CNS in adults/geriatrics. My PMSN will be as an AGNP in primary care, pending graduation and passing my boards in May of 2015.

My concern is the only jobs as a RN that I am finding are paying much less than what I was making (work from home) d/t being prn.

I live in eastern NC, where the jobs are scarce.

Any advice on how to make myself more marketable as a RN? I've been told my resume is impressive, but I don't get many offers. The offers I get are for a 1/3 of what I was making before. I guess I'm frustrated.

Go for what you can and know you graduate in just a few months. Sometimes these events are a blessing in disguise. What about home care?? I hate it personally, but there are often positions in that field. How long does unemployment last? Can you make it on that?

It's probably difficult to get hired when employers know you're about to graduate also - I wouldn't want to hire someone who is going to leave in a few months' time.

We just hired a NP who had just graduated but not taken boards into our ER to work as a RN. That person has since passed boards, and is working while looking for a job. Although in principle I agree with you ghillbert, I guess if the facility is short staffed to the point of being desperate....
