Stay away from Walden University

Best advice for those looking into Walden AGNP or FNP programs is to go somewhere else. You will have issues finding a preceptor and Walden is not recognized by many doctors and NP as an AGNP & FNP school. Also your books will be your teacher, the professors do not prepare you for the tests and some (not all) have bias feedback. The tuition continues to rise as it is a for profit. Once again finding a preceptor with Walden is a great problem, plus they do not have agreements with many places and expect you to do the foot work to find them affiliations. Stay away, they have a very low retention rate for many reasons.

Hi! I recently applied to Walden for acnp program. Application process was simple and easy. At first I was bit concerned about applying because of negative comments, but I truly believe it depends on how much work an individual puts into it. Of course, everyone's experience would be different and I am willing to make a positive one. Thanks

Sagira,

As with any education you receive, you only get out of it what you put into it. Same goes for our RN, we all didn't go to big name RN schools and I know I am a good RN and take pride in my patient's care. I would not let the negative comments about Walden University get to you or detour you from attending. I think you made a good choice. I have had no problems with my instructors or the program. It is time consuming but then again, I am getting out of it what I put into it.

Thanks. I believe I made a good choice too and I am glad to hear you are having a good experience. I looked into a few big name schools before but the cost is ridiculous and couldn't see myself paying that much more for the name. I know a nurse who graduated from University of phoenix online and had a great job offer before even she graduated. Good luck and keep me posted how things are.

Mark,

Finally I am glad to see someone who has taken the boards from Walden. Walden has not been in the NP curriculum very long so a lot of the retention rates and board passing stats are not available. I current attend Walden University and have no concerns about the program. I have heard some negative comments however, what program does not have it haters? Congrats on passing the boards-did you take the ANCC or the AANP? I haven't started my practicums yet but I am so looking forward to doing that next year.

I took the AANP 10 days after I graduated, without any pre-exam preparation...I was well prepared, and have done well in my job since then. I have no regrets about attending Walden, and would do it all again tomorrow.

I just graduated from South University online ANP program and guess what, like everyone else, I too had to find my own preceptors to complete my 600+ clinical hours (matter of fact, there are some post on here of me desperately trying to locate one...lol). Most programs require that you find your own preceptors.

I am currently attending Walden in their ASN-MSN Leadership and Management Program. I absolutely love it! I have been there for almost a year and the experience depends on what you make out of it! I feel that my professors have been spectacular. My academic adviser immediately went over the practicum requirements with me and provided me with a list of facilities that are already participating with Walden in my area. I can choose one of those or I can find my own facility with the requirements for the preceptor that are needed. i would recommend Walden to anyone! When you look up the reviews of walden some of them are good and some of them are not so good but I think it all depends on the individual and what you make of it. An online school is NOT going to spoon feed you. I like their academic rigor and I feel that I can complete the work and still have time to have a social life. The negative comments I have seen have not really been about the nursing program so this is surprising! If anyone has questions about Walden please do not hesitate to ask! My program is 19 months long because I had 2 pre-reqs to take prior to starting my program. I can't wait to be a Walden Graduate!!!

I'm also a student (RN-FNP) at Walden. I completed my undergraduate courses this week and I will begin the graduate courses on December 1! I have had a great experience at Walden so far.

I'm more than willing to discuss my experience with anyone who is curious. :)

They at least require 2 years experience before starting which is more than you can say about some programs. I will be starting the ACNP program in March. I think that with all programs there are pros and cons. To be honest, part of the problem may be that some who apply to get into Walden and were accepted were not prepared for grad school in the first place. After all Walden only requires a 2.5 GPA and no GRE for admission. As far as finding one's own preceptor's, I know nurse practitioners and doctors that would gladly help me out. I think it matters that you build a relationship with these people. Worst case scenario, just walk into a clinic and introduce yourself! The local brick and morter institutions in my area have the same requirement to find your own preceptor. Just be proactive and you should be fine.

Hello. I will be starting the FNP program at WaldenU in August 2015. Could anyone speak a little about your experience finding your clinical sites?

Did you have any issues finding a position after you graduated? Did they even care where you graduated from?
