St Joseph's College of Maine FNP program students

Nursing Students NP Students

Published

I wanted to start this thread for all of the new (and current) students at Saint Joseph's College of Maine FNP program.

Any info, news, updates or questions/concerns could be asked here for all the new and current students.

Any advice that the current students can give us new students would be greatly appreciated :)

For example...

1. How many books are required for NU 501?

2. Has setting up clinicals been difficult?

3. Have the current students had any trouble communicating with your advisors? Do they get back to you promptly?

4. Overall, how has the experience been? Are you glad you are in this program?

Thanks so much!

I just finished NU 500 and will be starting NU 503 Research 07/31. Can anyone give me an idea what this class is about? Is it all papers, any group assignments and etc...

Hey Debs17,

It's pretty much all papers. One of the discussions is a little more in-depth. No group assignments. You pick a certain topic and work with that throughout each lesson, tackling it a little further. So, I would recommend really choosing something you're interested in ;) Overall, I did not find the work too much to handle, but of course it's a lot of writing.

Hello all,

Does anyone know how long it usually takes for an assignment to be graded? I submitted one of my assignments 2 weeks ago and have still to hear from my instructor about my grade.

Thanks.

i had an instructor like that when i took nursing informatics she would wait up to 3 weeks. What i did was contact my advisor, it says in the policy that graded assignments are supposed to be graded within 1 week after being submitted. I would tell her that it's cutting into your time in completing the course in a timely manner. Also keep emailing the instructor.

Thanks for your reply, playboy.

Are the initials of your informatics instructor (MODERATOR EDIT OF INITIALS - PLEASE DO NOT POST NAMES OR INITIALS OF INSTRUCTORS PER TOS - THIS INFORMATION CAN BE CONVEYED VIA PRIVATE MESSAGE)? I had emailed her and got no reply. I will contact my advisor since this is really unfair to the students.

Did your instructor get upset when you kept emailing her?

No she didn't get upset. I didn't care if she did b/c i went be the policy and she was preventing me from finishing early.

I would really recommend emailing your advisor instead.

Hello Cookie,

Yes, I did email my advisor and should hopefully be hearing from her within the next day or so.

Thanks for the suggestion!

I am taking policy and it is not going so well, the assignments are not being graded in a timely manner, it is a lot of waiting; the first topic I presented was not accepted so in presenting a new topic had to wait for approval, then got penalized on the grade because of the late submission; the instructor does not communicate, she just cc's the advisor; it seems the strategy is, communicate late, send a grade late and it wont be a fair grade for the hard work put into topics and/or projects; the last 2 classess, things went very well, this instructor is very surprising, does not email back, does not seem interested; I am glad to see the post on the school policy because the last news I received (from this instructor) was that an entire module had to be completed before anything was graded, that seems ridiculous to me, especially when you are waiting for approval on a letter to a legislator...it really holds things up, is that the goal? hold the student up? seems that way with this course... at least with the school policy I have some ammunition....

re the above, I got in touch with my adviser at St. Josephs and she really came through for me....

how is everyone else doing in their classes?

Hello! I just finished all courses up to 603... will be starting clinicals in September! Just lined up two preceptors (one is just for additional hours). My primary preceptor is AMAZING... I couldn't be more excited to start clinicals with her!

In case anyone doesn't know yet, they changed the line-up of the courses for clinicals. We'll be doing young adults first (18-60), and then pediatrics & OB/Gyn, and then geriatrics. This is definitely to our benefit, since before it was pediatrics & gynecology.

I know that while many of you are still in the core courses and feeling frustrated, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. There are hiccups along the way. It gets better. If you have the chance to go on campus for a course, you'll meet a lot of the instructors, clinical coordinator, and many other students. It definitely changed my experience with SJCME, even in the online courses. It's nice to put a face to the people that you're submitting your assignments to. Hang in there!

Thanks for the inspiring comment ShannonRN09... it is nice to know that some students have gotten through this program successfully and are almost done. Good Luck with clinicals ...the end is almost near!!

Has anyone heard of other students graduating yet or at least on their final classes (Capstone classes)?

Also how are the NP classes (Pharmacology, Patho) formatted? Are they timed tests, quizzes, discussion boards? Any input would be great.

Thanks,

L.James
