Hi there:

- I am considering applying to an on-line FNP program, and have learned that

the student is responsible for securing their own preceptors.

- Was wondering how difficult it was to secure such preceptors? My background

has been mostly in Long-Term Care Facilities (4 years) and Private-Duty vent/trache

patients (1 year).

- Thanks in advance.

It has been the most stressful and difficult part of my educational journey. I'm on the last semester of yr 1 and almost was held back over 40 hrs of OB. I finally found someone but will be traveling over an hour each way and paying a toll to get there. If I had any idea how difficult it was going to be prior to getting this far into it I would have gone to a PA program. PAs, med students, PTs, & pharmacy students don't locate their own sites. We have had students that had preceptors back out at the last minute. Very Frustrating!

what program are you in mom to 4?

Loyola University New Orleans and there is no assistance from the program finding placement.

Mom To 4,

I'm in New Orleans as well and in an FNP program through UL Lafayette and we also have to find our own preceptors....very stressful and difficult, especially when competing with all of the medical schools around here. If you don't mind me asking, who did you use for your preceptors? I've been trying to get a peds and OB/gyn rotation set up since June with no luck :/

Does anyone know why we must find out own preceptors but med students, PA students do not? Just curious, I will be beginning my MSN in January :)

I did a adult health NP program and had to find a preceptor. I liked doing that because I could select who and where I wanted to be. You just need to look early I did almost a year in advance because some if the preceptorship are busy. Good luck.

It's because students choose to attend these programs. If students only attended programs that provided preceptors (these exist), then these programs wouldn't be able to get away with providing nothing. They have no incentive to change as long as people pay to attend these schools.

Thank you got replying.. I feel dumb and like I didn't research the school I want to go to enough now because I'm not sure if my school provides them or we have to find them. Do you know how we can find out? Just by contacting the school?
