Nursing Students NP Students

Hi all,

Has anyone else considered stopping their NP program? I have 2.5 semesters left (about 10 months) but I don't think I want to be an NP any longer. I liked the idea of it and enjoy my clinical experience but can not imagine doing the role myself. I think I will be anxious all the time and know that I will need to still learn so much more after school that I won't have much more free time than I have now which is pretty much none.

Having said all of that, I am going to quit my NP program. I'm trying to decide whether to finish out this semester or withdraw now.

I am embarrased that I won't be finishing the program and worried about explaining it to others but I don't want to continue if I'm not 100% about being an NP.

Has anyone else started NP school and then decided it was not for you?

Thanks for your thoughts!

I didn't but I do applaud you for having the insight and courage to make this decision sooner rather than later.

Wishing you all the best in your future.

Why can't you see yourself in this role? Are you not grasping the material? Do you dislike this type interaction with patients?

These two problems are normal and temporary. Most any professional graduate will feel some anxiety as they first start out on their own. Learning never stops when you are in a continuously changing career environment such as healthcare but it will be more intense in the beginning. Once you have gained experience you will feel more confident and competent in your role and find that you won't have to devote your entire life to it. The NPs I know still have lives outside of work ;)

If you feel like you dislike the work of a NP and will be miserable in that role then you should definately stop pursuing it now. If you feel like you are struggling with not only the school work but the concepts and competencies of NP work so much so that you may be a danger to your patients then certainly consider another career. However, if you are having second thoughts about completing the program because you are anxious about starting over in a new role or because you do want to put in the extra hours and effort to continue your education post graduation, well, I wouldn't exactly consider that a courageous decision, as previously mentioned. It's not shameful by any means, just a bit short-sighted perhaps. Choosing the path of least resistance and all that...

Good luck in whatever you decide! Only you can know what is best for your situation and there is probably more to your decision then you have shared with us. My comments are only based on your initial post. Either way I would probably finish out the semester if it is too late to receive any tuition reimbursement.

I am sorry you feel this way. However, I can understand. Really try to consider all your options.

Given the long hours you put into almost completing the program and the cost of tuition, I would just complete the entire program. Therefore, if you later decide you want to practice at least it would be an option for you.
