Anybody run into problems with preceptors because they are from an online program?

I am a NP student at Indiana Statte University. I recently started my clinicals for Health Assessment in CT. It took me forever to find someone who would take me but eventually I found a pediatrician's office and applied for the MinuteClinic NP student program. The pediatrician was awesome. He took his time to teach me things (as preceptors should do) and made sure I had enough time to do my own assessment and learn what I needed to. The preceptor at MinuteClinic was not as good, in my opinion. We didn't get a long very well and I think a lot of it had to do with the fact that she disapproved of me being from an online program. In fact, she stated on a couple of occasions that she had her "doubts about doing a program like FNP online" and "how credible is this school?" It was irritating, unprofessional, and belittling (among other things). I found myself constatntly having to prove myself and defend myself. We both wind up giving each other less than stellar reviews, but lucky for me my track record speaks for itself and I had documentation of her behavior and lack of knowledge. Unfortunately, I think I may have gotten her into some serious trouble with her boss (which I honestly did not mean to do). I was wondering if anyone else has come across an issue like this when coming from an online program?

I am sorry that your preceptor may have gotten in trouble over precepting you, but it seems her own behavior got her into that predicament. Hopefully, she takes a more positive attitude toward her preceptees in the future or stops being a preceptor altogether.

Georgetown does have an online MSN-FNP program. After the completion of the program you can sit for the boards and will be licensed as a nurse practitioner.

I think minute clinic was only good for health assessment. Beyond that, you will not get a good clinical experience with minute clinic. This is just my opinion though.

That is not correct, Georgetown have a FNP program. Look into their website.

I have not been turned away or chastised for being from an online program. However, a few of my preceptors have expressed worries about the amount of online programs and whether they are training adequate future providers. Thankfully, my preceptors have never questioned my skills or knowledge because of the online program, rather it was more of a conversation about the type of nurse/person it would take to adequately "train themselves" from some of the less involved universities.

I have enough problems finding preceptors, and I go to an brick and mortar, with an online format. I am out of state, and it has been impossible to secure any contracts with any of the hospital systems in the state, except for one out in the middle of nowhere. Nope, can't do that... not that desperate just yet. It's hard out there. I even tried Minute Clinic in Oklahoma City (I live in Tulsa, and was willing to commute 1.5 hours away), and they told me no :(

I feel you Jessica. I actually had to move back to Florida for clinicals from Connecticut to find decent clinicals. CT has so many schools ( Yale, Fairfeild, Quinnipiac, UConn etc) that finding clinicals was impossible. It also didn't help that New York and Mass aren't too far.

Georgetown University does have 3 online NP programs. Family, Acute, Womens Health/Midwifery. They have had these for several years now. I know for a fact because I am enrolled in the Family Nurse Practitioner program. I am not sure if they offer DNP because I want interested in DNP because at this time it isn't necessary.

Xtclass08 are you working in ct as an aprn? Willing to take a chamberlain college np student for practicums in march 2017? I am as you were having much difficulty finding a preceptor in ct.

are you in ct as an aprn now?

No I am no longer in CT. Sorry npstudentct. I know how hard it is to find clinicals. That's why for my DNP I'm going to a local school that provides clinics sites. Thank God!

Npstudentct did you ever end up finding reliable clinical placements in CT? I'm having the same issue in that area and would love any insight! Thank you.
