Nursing in Charleston SC

U.S.A. South Carolina

Published

I am looking for some info on what the nursing field is like in SC. I currently am a LPN in Ma and am planning on making a move down to SC next summer.

I am am hoping to have my associate RN by that time but just in case things don't go according to plan any info on the lpn/rn field would be very helpful (job outlook, salaries, nursing schools in the area to complete my BSN, etc)

also if anyone has any info on what the first steps are to transferring your license to another state that would also be very helpful :)

thank you in advance!

I endorsed my license to NC some months ago. The whole process took about 6 weeks and a couple hundred bucks. My advice is to have the SC license "in hand" so to speak before applying for jobs to show potential employers you are serious about moving (if you can, that is. Might depend on if MA is a compact state or not). On that note, apply for jobs early. It took me a few months to secure employment but I was able to get a job secured before moving. Not in my ideal position tho.

Best to check SC's board of nursing website under "endorsement" for specific info. Good luck!

I'm an RN at the largest teaching hospital in the state. There are few LPN jobs posted at our hospital. Further, w/o a connection it is becoming difficult to find jobs that don't specify "BSN only." Most of the major hospitals in the area are pursuing magnet status. That being said, there is a significant aging population in Charleston and rehab hospitals, nursing homes and retirement communities that often hire new grads, ADNs and LPNs.

Check out Vibra hospital in Mt Pleasant. I know several new grads that started out there, worked a year, then found a job at MUSC or Roper.
