Working as school nurse in the US

Hello and good day!

I just want to know, is it possible for me to work as a school nurse in the US? I'm from the Philippines, 21 y/o and fresh graduate w/ local license (I just passed our board exam :lol2:) . I'm planning to take the NCLEX-RN.

Please enlighten me and suggestions/advice are welcome. Thank you very much

From looking at the other threads, I think that you would need some experience (at least a year or two), before your application would be really considered. I don't know if it is different in the Phillipines, but usually you only have a short rotation in pediatrics (one semester or less) in nursing schools in the US. The majority of clinicals are in adult medical units.

I would be surprised if you could get a job as a school nurse without any previous nursing and/or public health experience. Also, considering your age, you probably haven't had much experience with dealing with childre. I found my experience as a mother of four to be immensely helpful when I started 8 years ago.

I suggest you work with children at a hospital or private duty. I worked with adults and children in home care and was a per diem private duty pediatric nurse on weekends, I found the private duty most helpful. In school nursing you will be making your own decisions so you need experience for yourself and for the school......enjoy your journey
