Special ed school nurse

Does anyone have experience working exclusively with special ed children? I am new to school nursing and was just offered a school nurse position in a special ed program. I would cover 7 schools and about 250 students, all with special needs. Any advice? Can you tell me about your typical day?

I thought I've seen similar information like that you've asked for. The Developmental Disabilities forum here on AN might help if you haven't checked it out already.

Make sure you get an orientation at each school! I posted some other ideas for a similar question you asked about school nursing. 7 schools is quite a lot. Make sure there is someone you can call for advice. Will you be the only special ed nurse? Do all the schools follow same format (documentation, care plans, teachers......are all meds locked up, who has access, who can give emergency medicines if needed, what are the laws in your state?). Who will be your back up? Is there a health assistant at each school? Does the health assistant have info on special ed kids and can they assist if needed? How will you do health screenings o. Children with special needs? You definitely have to be knowledgable regarding how to assess them. Are their care plans and Iep's up to date?
