I'm back...with questions

Specialties School

Hi all-I decided to come back. This year is tough with diabetics/seizures/CF and a variety of other health issues. I still STRUGGLE and question whether or not I made the right choice. I had a possible position that was presented to me which would be a pretty significant increase in pay and no direct patient care that is still awaiting approval from the hospital. I am pretty sure I will take it if it comes to me.

Anyways random question. Do any of you use essential oils for ailments in your office? I have a nurse in my area that does and swears it decreases visits and less OTC meds. I'm on the fence about how I feel about it.

NO, NO, and NO. Even with a MD order. Medications at school must be approved by the FDA for use with whatever condition it is being prescribed for or intended to be used for. We've had doctors send notes to school for us to apply XYZ oil on the temples at noon for ADHD...NO, NO, and NO!

Right when I got hired my district updated out medication policy to state only FDA approved drugs. We are also scent free because I have multiple super sensitive asthmatics

Yea we had a parent supply a supposed eo necklace to her kiddo and the teacher had difficulty breathing. ER for her, no more necklace.

i will not apply any oils to students. If parents want to use them before school, then have at it. To me it's no worse than the ms boys that come in bathed in Axe body spray. But I will not apply them, I will not take an order, I do not want to hear about them. Gas X i probably would give - it comes down to FDA approval. Lactaid and the supplements like that is where the waters start to get murky.

Now - outside school do i use them in my own house, yes. If you are interested, I can tell you what helped clear up my psoriasis. (Lord bless my Irish skin!)

I also am on the same page with Jedrnurse - peppermints are kept in a huge jar on my desk. They cut down visit times nicely and between those and saltines, life is good! (i am surprised though by how many kids tell me - eww! i don't like mints)

I hope I never have a parent who wants me to use an essential oil like lavender on their kid. I'm allergic to most flowers and severely allergic to some flowers. Sorry, no can do.
