How to become a school nurse?

Hi all,

I am considering becoming a school nurse, eventually, if I don't go the Health IT route.

Was wondering what's the best course of action? Degree-wise, does one need a master's? And in what?

Thank you!

That is different based on your state and your school district. I got my RN because I thought I needed it, well it turns out my LPN would be just fine. There are a lot of LPN school nurses in my region of the state. So always check that out first.

In my state it's minimum BSN/RN with post bac certificate and state school nurse certification (only a few credits shy of a masters so many school nurses have a MSN) to sub minimum of RN with state dept of ed substitute school nurse certificate

Thank you!

I am a new grad with my BSN, and actually read through a ton of pages here, and found that a good way to get your foot in the door is by applying a substitute. I actually found a local school district looking to hire nurses (no experience required) for their pool. I do have a full-time job in a NICU, but I'm guessing it can't hurt if I get accepted/called in on a day off?

Thanks for the insight :)

Starting as a sub is a great way to get your foot in the door. good luck to you and come ask us any questions you need to know.

Hi Mindy,

I posted this on the other forum posting of yours but I wasn't sure if you were able to see it. I know it's irrelevant to this post, but I am very interested in the ABSN program, so was wondering if you could share your stats or advise as to what experiences helped you the most in becoming a strong candidate? I've applied to a lot of the clinical technician positions in the INOVA hospitals to get some experiences under the nurses but it's terribly competitive to get the position. :/ I would love to chat with you about your experiences or just to have a mentor in general.

My email is [email protected] Thanks so much! :)
