How to become a SCHOOL NURSE-TEACHER

I have been working as a substitute school nurse for about 6 months now. I live in NY right outside of NYC. There have been a few postings for School Nurse-Teachers as of lately. I am wondering what path I should take to become certified. I am assuming that these jobs are popping up because school districts need the nurses to teach health as well as work as a school nurse simultaneously. I am wondering if anyone has this certification, what what the exact path you took to get the cert. Did you eventually gain an MSN in Nursing Education? According to nasbe.org "For certification as a school nurse-teacher, a candidate must possess a bachelor's degree, have completed six semester hours of professional education courses, hold a registered nursing license in the state of New York, have participated in the child abuse identification and school violence prevention workshops, and have fingerprint clearance." http://www.nasbe.org/healthy_schools/hs/bytopics.php?topicid=2130

Question: Can we school nurses take any courses relating to education even if we already have a BSN? Do the courses have to be Master level education courses?

Hi - I'm a California School Nurse so I don't think I can help you but wanted to say hello.

Here in CA, we have to have a BSN to get the job. If we do not have a School Nurse Credential, the state grants us a temporary one that lasts 5 years to give us a chance to go back to school to get our credential.

It isn't certification. It is credential.

I'm hoping some NY nurses will help.

I am a School Nurse-Teacher in New York. I had my BSN and thankfully I had education credits from my undergrad years. I needed to take 3 credits in Education (for a total of 6 credits). These can be undergrad or graduate but I decided to go graduate because after you get your certification as a SNT you need to get a Masters degree within 5 years so those credits may counts towards my masters. Your Masters can then be in Nursing OR in Education. I am actually planning on getting mine in Education because I think it will benefit me the most for the Health Classes I teach. I had to take my Child Abuse recognition and reporting course again because I no longer had documentation of taking it to become an RN (even though it's the same state they won't take the Board of Nursing's word that I took it. I tried.). I took it online as well as a Violence Prevention course they require. They were easy to pass. They now have a requirement for a DASA course but I didn't have to do that because it is a new requirement. If you have not already done so you will need to be fingerprinted as well. I put together all of my documentation (official transcripts, nursing license, course certifications, etc.) and submitted it to my local area BOCES for evaluation. I think it cost me $100. It then takes them about 6 weeks I believe to process your paperwork. If you have a NYS Teach account online you can watch as they process your documents. If you are missing anything they will send you a letter letting you know what you will need. Hope this helps. If I can help further please feel free to PM me.

Just as a side note: I have spoken to 2 other SNTs in NYS and they have said their their districts are getting rid of their SNT and going for straight School Nurses to save $$$. I think it's great that SNT positions are coming up for you! I am in a small school so it made sense for both me and my district and I love it! Good luck!

What I am trying to understand is how the SNT is used... do you simultaneously teach health and perform RN duties for the school as well? I am also wondering what courses would be considered educational... What school did you enroll in the 3 credit course you needed?

So, a school nurse teacher is probably equivalent to getting your school nurse credential. We are on a par with teachers out here pay-wise.

Being a School Nurse-Teacher in NY means you can teach Health classes for grades K-12. I currently teach 2-4 Health Classes per week and I am the School Nurse in the building. It gets a bit hectic at times but they will interrupt health class if there's an emergency only. I'll take the chaos because I really love teaching the kids.

Classes that would count as the "Professional Education" classes seem to be the classes that help you learn methods of teaching. In college I had taken a Children's Literature in Teaching course and last summer I took a Writing as Learning course. I took it through Adelphi University.
