Grrrrr.....

So, I had a kiddo take a hard fall at recess las week. Overall, okay, but had several abrasions that included a pretty nasty gash to his knee. No stitches needed.

I saw him in the office this week and popped my head to ask him how he is....he says: "I'm doing good! My mom has a friend who's a real nurse, and he put some butterfly bandages on my knee and wrapped it up!"

I know the kid is only 10, but geeze. "Real Nurse?" I have RN after my name, too, kiddo.

Yes, I do know.....

Unfortunately it's still around today and can be hurtful...

I have had students more than once ask if I was a "real nurse"! Then when I got a part time job in the hospital my son who was 8 at the time asked if I was going to be a real nurse now! It must be the whole school environment thing!! Still it's aggravating!!

I have parents ask me if I'm a real nurse... It kind of hurts, but I have to remember that I guess it's just not common knowledge. A lot of people don't even know they have a school nurse now-a-days.

I felt the same way, I became a school nurse at 24 and it didnt help that I was 4'10. I had a parent ask me if I just applied and landed the job, and I said "Noooo I went to school for 4 years to get my Bachelor's degree in Nursing , passed a test to be a Registered Nurse and I've been a nurse for 2 years prior to this." It's sad to think people think anyone off the street can just apply to be a school nurse. Actually it's ignorant.

Never really had the kids say anything like that, but a few called me "doctor" sometimes, and I corrected them of course.
