Hey everyone,

I graduated this May, passed boards in June and was hired for my first nursing job as a school nurse. At first I thought it was going to be an awesome job because of the hours...but now I'm scared as I have NO experience as a nurse and everyone kept saying to me "your a nurse, so you know"...anyone else going through this? Am I making a mistake by not starting out my career in a hospital?? My husband is overseas and we have a 4 year old in childcare which is why I had to find a job with daytime hours. I am going to try and do PRN at our 1 local hospital.

Thanks for your input!!:monkeydance:

armywifeRN,

I am sort of in your same situation. I worked at a Children's hospital as a patient care assistant for about a year. I have graduated with a BSN and now am a RN. I loved my rotation in nursing school with a school nurse. I am seriously considering this, but am nervous i will not get hired with no experience. I was told that in schools experience isnt as important as in hospitals. Any advice?

THanks!

Thank you for your comments. I did accept the school nurse job and have completed my 1st year. I will start my 2nd year in a few weeks. Although I love the job and will continue because of the hours, I wish there was a way I could work in a hospital setting so that I can build more marketable nursing skills. (shots, IV's, wound care, etc...) But, the job is very rewarding and working in a high school setting is a lot of fun, I hope you are able to get the job and see for yourself! best of luck to you!

I graduate next week and already have a job lined up on a hospital med/surg floor but was just called for a school nurse job 5 min from home. I am torn between the two. Should I sacrifice $$$ & learning experience for convinence and having the same schedule as my 6 yr old?

rmartinez--- Only you know what you can do financially. I worked only a few months in a hospital, and knew that that type of schedule would not work with the kids that I hoped to have someday. You can never go back and get those precious years and moments that you would miss out on with a hospital schedule. I wouldn't have done it any other way.

I'm still praying that I will get the job at the school.

If I were you I would try to get some weekend work in the hospital - maybe ever Sunday or every other weekend and then try to do hospital work over the summer.

Thank you for the sacrifice you and your husband are making for all of us.

It's been a while since I posted on here. While I enjoyed my school nursing job, I am finding Psychiatric nursing to be my cup of tea. I LOVE it! The school nursing definately prepared me for my current job. Best of luck to all of you in the job you choose :o)
