Have you planned what your 'peri-Retirement' job will be?

Nurses Retired

Currently, I work for the federal government as a QI nurse. It's great, fulfilling, yada, yada.

Having said that, I'm so tired of the Monday through Friday 9-5 grind. I'm in my early forties and will retire from the Feds promptly at 57.

At that point, I won't have enough money saved for a FULL retirement, but will want to significantly slow down.

Are there any of you that had a transitional retirement job that allows for flexibility and mobility (ability to travel)?

I'm thinking flu shot nurse, online adjunct, remote chart review.

Any other ideas?

I am 61 and work full time in Nursing Professional Development at a hospital. Thinking along the same lines as you are, I began adjuncting (mostly online) back in 2006, when I was 51 years old -- not only thinking about possibly easing into retirement, but also thinking that having a "plan B" would be good in case I lost my job in the bad economy and had trouble finding another.

I've been teaching 1 or 2 classes per year since then to "keep that door open." However, I find that as I near the age at which I always thought I would want to drop down to part time, I feel less and less like actually doing it. I like the extra money I have in my pocket from the 2nd job -- and from the fact that my mortgage is paid off. Living on my savings for 30 years or more seems a little scary in spite of the fact that I have done well with my retirement accounts. And I just feel less and less ready to be "put out to pasture." So I keep putting that planned retirement back a little.

Yes, that's my fear too (of running out of money). God willing, my mortgage will be paid by then.

I just want to the flexibility of doing a lot or hardly nothing at all.

I always thought working for state or federal that the retirement pension income is pretty good compared to the private sector which is nonexistent. I don't even work in a union hospital, so right now I don't get good retirement benefits other than the money I put away in my 401k. all I know is that you have plenty for retirement. Quit stressing out. I've seen people live a happy life for so much less or hardly any money at all. Money is relative. I completely understand the idea "you can never have enough money" but trust me, you got plenty

I plan to become an expat in my mid-50s. and just live in Bali or Southeast Asia where my money will go a long way.
