Privet Vs State universities for BSN which is better?

Nursing Students ADN/BSN

Published

Hello every one this is my first post.

I am currently enrolled in a AND and will finish in Dec with a AND. I love this field and I cannot wait to get working as a nurse. I also want to go on and get my BSN as soon as possible. So I have a question for those who are managers who hire nurses. My question is: would the university that you received your BSN matter? I am referring to a State university such as University of California or a privet university such as University of Phoenix? The reason I ask this is because I worked 9 years for Corporate America and I sat in on resume reviews and a lot of managers tossed resumes of people who attended privet universities such as University of Phoenix. There rational was "you buy that degree, the curriculum is based on the number of students passing vs. the learning compared to State universities". I know I might be opening a can of worms here, but I have been told that by many business managers and engineers during my career in Corporate America. I looked into both programs and I am leaning more on University of Phoenix d/t their campus is in my own city. I would just like some thoughts. Well thank you for reading this and you all have a great forum, I been lurking and finally posted.

I don't think the issue is public vs. private so much as wariness about for-profit universities. Most private universities are non-profit, so I think there may be some confusion there. Places like U of Phoenix, however, are for-profit, meaning that a big goal of theirs is to increase profitability for share-holders. The fear is that the school is more concerned with bringing money in the door than offering a quality education. Whether that fear is truly justified or not is open to continuous debate.

I am not a hiring person, so I can't say what HR thinks when they see U of Phoenix on a resume, but for yourself personally, I would advise you to check out the distance learning forum on this website and see what others think of their education. Do as much research as you can before committing to any one path. The education that backs the degree is far more valuable than the sheepskin itself.

Privet is a type of plant, btw. :)
