Need advice

Nursing Students ADN/BSN

OK, so I wanted to get some input from people that are already nurses and have a feel for what that job is all about. I'm currently taking pre-reqs to try to get into a program but I've started having some second thoughts. Not really second thoughts so much but...something. I currently have a good job that I've held for over 18 years. The business I work in has been sold and is now corporately owned so I've been working on my backup plan (nursing school) because I want to be able to have a life skill that I can always have to get employment. There is no telling what will hapen now that we are corporately owned. When it comes down to getting into program would you quit a good job to work towards lifetime security (since the security of the 18 year job is going down the tubes quickly) or would you just stay at the job until you were forced out and then you wouldn't have any options but to take a job making 1/2 of your current salary. Plus I would have to go into debt with student loans. What would you do? Would you get your nursing license still or wait?

If you stay, will you get a severance?

My suggestion is to start saving as much money as you can and take night classes to get all of your pre-reqs and co-reqs done while you still have a good job. This will make nursing school easier to concentrate on and you will not be as stressed out if you have to take on a part time job. Just take a class or two at a time, so that you can get A's. This will ensure good placement on the waiting list for classes.

Thanks for the advice 8flood8. I've been taking one or two classes each semester for the last year or so, but now it's getting down to the wire. Thanks again.

Just random advice:

I'd wait.

No solid and backed up reasons for you(except maybe the current new grad issues that should likely change by the time you're done anyway, etc.) and maybe because it seems I've noticed a greater than not number of 2nd and 3rd career folks going through what appears to be even more startling reality shock than used to be the norm...

I don't know.

You have a good thing where you are and you've already positioned yourself to make the actual jump into school when you are entirely positive you're ready. School's not going anywhere and, for now anyway, neither is a position that you are confident you enjoy.
