What area of public health do you work in?

by Aneroo

Prenatal, adult health, women's health, STD's, communicable disease, children's health, something I missed, or do you do it all?

I work in Children's Health (school nurse). I'm amazed when I head over to the school nurse section at how many are working through the schools and not the county or a hospital.

I do LTC waiver assessments and NF placement assessments--in Wyoming it's called "LT-101" form. However I am just a contract nurse working 8 hours/week max doing the LT-101's; most of the other RNs in my PH office do maternal/child health, travel and immunization clinics, prenatal/best beginnings and BT prep.

Our school nurses in Wyoming are employees of the school districts and NOT the health department--I hadn't heard of this until I was browsing school nurse jobs!

Thank you for replying! I was afraid no one ever would!
I'm amazed at how many of us (school nurses) actually work through the schools and not another agency (public health or a hospital). I like having all of the extra nurses there to back me up and help with decision making- some of the school nurses don't have a nurse as a supervisor.

I can tell you that all our county's school nurses report to the principal as their supervisor--not another nurse! It may just be the "western, rural Wyoming" feel but the nurse is her own island in the school. In my town of 25000, we have 2 full time school nurses, and all the elementaries get a school nurse for only part of the week. I think we have 8 total in the school district.

I was doing general work- a little of everything but recently joined the TB team. I really enjoy it. I know many people are intimidated by the paperwork and the idea of TB but its challenging and engaging.

Dear YouKnowHo,

I am a recent ADN grad and have just been offered a position at our local TB bureau. I am very excited about this opportunity and at the same time a little nervous.
Can you tell me what you find the most challenging and what you like the most about your position?

Many thks!

Lots of challenging aspect of being on the TB team. First off, I find that there are many doctors in the community with no clue how to treat TB. Its frustrating when they dont want your help/advice/recommendations and put up a fight. Getting the patient to understand the severity of the diagnosis and to not resist treatment is another challenge. Of course the oodles of paperwork dont help either. I do enjoy it though. Its like you are managing so many pieces that I am surprised I can keep it all straight. Have fun and ask lots of questions!!

I started a public health nurse program within my local police department. My focus is keeping the cops healthy and providing screening services in medically under served areas within the community. I finished the year-long part time local reserve police academy recently to get a better idea of stress involved with police work. An interesting journey to say the least.
