Hi All

I have been looking online for a magazine on psychiatric nursing, I have found Journal of The American Psychiatric Nurses Association but thats expensive and has 5 issues only. I'm sure it's worth the money and full of interesting and valuable information but I just wanted to sign up for a lightweight magazine lol There seems to be a magazine on every other nursing specialty but I can't find anything in psych, any ideas? thanks !

Yes the nursing journals are expensive, but you can use the library of any nursing school to see the journals for free and to explore differences.

Back before I went to grad school, I used to subscribe to JPN, the Journal of Psychosocial Nursing. It was not particularly expensive and more "user-friendly" for "regular" psych nurses than the hard-core academic journals -- articles that were actually helpful for daily practice on useful topics (how to communicate and set limits with borderlines, safety practices with restraints, stuff like that). It is more in line with what I think you mean by "lightweight" (it had pictures (photos and artwork), not just copy and graphs -- even used to have a regular feature highlighting art done by psych nurses). I haven't seen it in years and don't even know if it's still available, but you might want to check on that.

Best wishes!

I decided to give the journal a shot myself, especially since I'm pretty sure we can write off professional magazine subscriptions on the taxes.

Thanks! I have been looking for a good psych nursing magazine too.

I belong to the American Psychiatric Nurses Association and we get the journal with it. It is more of a research-centered based sort of "technical" magazine. Unless you are into statistics, et al, it is a "heavy hitter".........I have not checked out the other one mentioned though.....JPN.............However, I think I will in that it sounds to be more down to "earth" with regards to day-to-day issues within psychiatric/mental health nursing. It's great to know of the various research that has been done in various areas of psychiatrist/mental health field, but my eyes start to cross when it comes to all of the stats and mumbo-jumbo.............
