New Grad -- Reference Books?

HI-- I am a new grad and was recently hired to an inpatient, general psych unit. I was wondering if anyone could recommend a decent pocket guide or reference (pertaining to psych nursing) that I could easily keep by me during the orientation process. Any other suggestions for a new grad working in psych are welcome!! THANKS.

I think one of the best books ever is Kaplan and Sadock's "Synopsis of Psychiatry" not a nursing text, but the typical med.school psych. text. Its huge, so not for your pocket! For general advice, be yourself...all that talk in nursing school about being genuine (if they are still talking about that) is the best advice ever. If you can combine that with compassion, humanity and common sense, you'll be a star and will help so many...

hey there, new grad! i recommend the pocket guide called "psych notes" put out by the people that put out other pocket guides. i got mine off amazon.com. i usually recommend it to all new psych nurses. it has info on the differential dx, s/s, interventions, interviews, & some of the newer psych meds.

Hey, I recently ordered a pocket book called "Nursing Made Incredibly Easy" so maybe they have one for psych nursing. Look into it. It's a great reference book.

Any book that reduces nursing to being "incredibly easy" - is obviously missing some text :wink2:

I am looking to acquire the CD that goes with the book, Essentials of Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing (3rd Edition) by Mary Townsend. I already have the book. Would anyone be able to sell the CD separately or loan it to me with promise of return? Thanks.

I just got that one--I've thumbed through it and it looks like it'll be really helpful.

I already had Psych Nursing Made Incredibly Easy...it's a good book. It helped get me through Psych class.

You might want to get a book that talks about labs, what they're for, what results mean, too. I got one and it was helpful, back in the olden days...
