Hi everyone. Psych isn't my specialty so maybe you all can help me out. My bil was recently diagnosed with schizophrenia. He was hearing voices. He was started on meds.

I was looking for a good easy to read book for famlies of people with schizophrenia to help my husband and his family better understand and cope. I am afraid they are still in some denial with statements like "He still hears some voices, but he can handle it". My husband thinks he needs to get out of the house more and he would be better. So I appreciate any help.

Thanks. Ang

Contact NAMI, a national advocacy organization (with state/local chapters) for the mentally ill and their families. They have lots of literature available, plus workshops/classes, a monthly newsletter, regular meetings (in some areas, not all), and lots of other resources.

I agree with the above...and it's National Alliance for the Mentally Ill, in case you didn't know. They have lots of info and great classes for the families of people with mental illnesses.

I just checked out their website and they had alot of good info. I will pass it along to dh. I will just print it out for mil and fil since they aren't tech savvy.

I remember when they started out as the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill, but I thought they had changed the name more recently to something more "warm and fuzzy" (but with the same initials) -- which is why I didn't spell out the name ...

Ah, yes -- I just Googled. It's now officially "National Alliance for Mental Illness."
