Will my chances be harmed if I retake prereq courses?

Is it ok to retake prereq courses if I didn't make an A or B the first time as a college undergrad? Will the school look at the old grade and the most recent one when they evaluate all my transcripts, or do they take the highest grade from that course? How does this all work?

Depends on the program. Where I went to school, we were allowed to retake a course once for a better grade. I didn't get into nursing school my first year because of my GPA...I was SO close, too! I decided to retake one of my pre-reqs to turn that B into an A to increase my chance of getting in the next year....and sure enough, I did!
