what should i do? will nursing still be a good fit for me?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hello everyone! Newbie here and longtime lurker.

I'm almost finished with high school and I'm trying to figure out what I want to study especially because I want to finish college on time.

I've previously been considering majoring in history and/or political science and maybe minoring in human rights or something. I love to read and when I go to the library those are the books I frequently bring home. If I pick these options I don't see any career that I'd be happy in pursuing though... and I considered law but it's difficult to get into human rights work and I HATE the corporate aspect of it so despite what others have told me I don't know about law school at all and teaching is not for me either.

I recently had surgery too and it's been very painful and traumatizing. The experience has really changed my mind and my perception of nurses and nursing and before I became interested in history I was planning on premed. I also enjoy nutrition and health and I've cared for ill family members before. I could see myself in scrubs working a long shift...and I have an aunt who's a nurse and it just seemed like a nice option after speaking with her.

I then realized you can work for MSF as a nurse and do a lot around the world. I'm only worried if I become a nurse I might be nurturing my communication and patient side of me and might be neglecting the talent I have for writing letters my interest in social justice. So I'm worried. At this point it's either nursing, history, or political science for me.

I don't know what to do. I can shadow a nurse but I want to know whether exploring my other interests in depth will be possible as a nurse (outside of career).

I almost signed up for nursing prereqs (bio, chem, psych, etc ) but then had my doubts. It's so complicated!

Advice?

Oh yeah I just wanted to add I've explored the cons of nursing, and I'm still not put off by the profession at all. :)
