UT Austin Pre-nursing to BSN

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hello!

I am an external transfer student.

I heard that once you accepted to UT as pre-nursing from other college ( I am from Junior college)

you need to take pre-nursing courses for a semester, and then students should apply to nursing program for upper division.

Is that true?

I am confused that because some said that once you admitted to UT nursing school, you are "automatically" get into UT nursing school. what does it mean?

does it mean I don't have to apply to nursing program for upper division in my case?

Could anyone clarify this please?

Thank you very much!

I answered this in another thread but I'm going to leave it here also in case anyone else is searching:

As you might know by now, the rules have changed. You no longer have to do the upper division application at all, but rather almost everyone that's admitted gets automatic admission to the nursing the program with admission to UT in general with the exception of internal transfers. Internals still have to apply to the SoN.

External transfer applications might be different though only because you are applying directly to UT with nursing as your first declared major. If you do get accepted with nursing as your first major then you probably will also be directly accepted directly into the nursing program. Previously, you had to do the upper division applications. That's been done away with completely.

If for some reason you do not get accepted with nursing as your first major and you really want to get into the program, I would highly suggest that you go with your second major and transfer internally into the program as soon as possible. It's not impossible to do but it will take some work on your end to keep grades up, find volunteer/work opportunities, and get excellent references that will make your application shine. Don't give up!

The new system has the entire cohort taking the exact same classes every semester and each class is pretty much packed to capacity (they are much larger than the traditional track). Some classes are even combined with freshman and sophomores. This, unfortunately, leaves very little room for any new students (both internal and external) to transfer into the program mostly because of lack of space. My theory is that transfer spots are available based on the number of new program students that DROP out. What used to be a set number of available spots (40 or 80) each semester, has now become a pretty obscure number.

In terms of how classes are scheduled in the new program, many of the freshman and sophomores are taking several hard science classes ALONG with nursing fundamentals. Skills

labs are starting earlier in the sophomore year as opposed to the junior year.

Honestly speaking, I think it's a "weed out" method to drop the weakest students early on in the program.

Hi there! Just wondering if you got into the program and if you were accepted externally. I'm applying as a transfer student from UTD (Biology major) and am extremely worried I won't get into my first choice nursing program at UT. If so, could you post your stats? :-)

Hi !

Im also applying for this fall. My current stats is okay Im just focusing on doing better and retaking courses : Chemistry A , Stats B (retake), Biology B. cumm. gpa is pretty low 3.0 currently there is a upward trend, but hopefully they look at the full application I'm hoping my essay and work experience as a patient care tech. and medical assistant help my application. I also have over 300 volunteer experience and also involved in organizations.

Aw, thank you for replying.

But unfortunately, UT did not take me in :, (.

I had 3.79 for overall GPA when I applied, but my GPA was 3.8 right before I got answer from them. I also had 3.7 for my science GPA from Austin Community College. ( A&P, Chem& Bio)

Yes. It was a big disappointment. I cried when I get email from UT.:crying2:

However, I transferred to UT arlington in fall 2016. UT arlington offered me scholarship, which was great lol. I also met good roommates.

One of my roomates were in nursing program in UTA ( UT at arlington) and she just graduated in December 2016. Through this roomate, I met many friends who are in nursing program and learned a lot about nursing.

My roommate also helped me out to apply a job in hospital in Fort Worth in Dallas, and I just got hired as a secretary/ patient care tech in the hospital in last month so I am currently getting a unit training :)

And surprisingly, one of my unit nurses knows my roommates cause my unit nurse also graduated UTA.

UTA nursing program seems pretty broad here, because I made a friend who I met during the hospital orientation & she is also currently taking online nursing program in UTA. She is also willing to help me a lot and we met 3 times to study together after job orientation.

It was very hard and sad for me for accepting that UT did not take me in at first, but I am acutllay enjoying my life in UTA :)

I feel that I am blessed that I met good people since I moved to Dallas. I can't wait to get into nursing program in UTA and meet more good people.

I actually feel step forward to my career even more !

Of course, you should try your best to your goal and try to get into UT!

I know some people might think I am rationalizing myself. Maybe they are right, but I don't regret because I really tried my best to get into UT in my circumstance.

I just wanted to say that not getting accept to UT is not an end of world. (JUST IF you don't get accept in)

Although I did not get into UT, I won't give up nursing career. So I don't have any regret :)

So I wish you luck :)!!!!!:inlove:

hey! I was thinking of going to UTA this spring for nursing too. I would need to take their nursing pre-reqs too. Are you just applying as a pre-nursing major and starting in the fall?

Haha

I wrote this topic long time ago.

I got accepted to UTA as a transfer student in Fall 2016,

And I took pre nursing courses and some upper division courses from UTA for a year. And then I applied to UTA on-campus nursing and I took off school in Fall 2017.

And I got accepted to UTA nursing school for Spring 2018,

So I am J1 nursing student in UTA now :)

I apologize I did not reply to your questions.

So your major would show as undecided when you are accepted to UTA if you are a transfer student.

Once you got into nursing program, then your major status will change as "Nursing".

I mostly took all my prerequisite classes from Austin Community College (Austin was my original site), and I took pre nursing courses and upper division elective courses from UTA.

Once I finished all classes, I took my admission HESI and applied to UTA nursing school. However now UTA changed their system to TEAS instead of HESI ( or both. I am not quite sure) .

So if you apply to UTA nursing, make sure if you can still take HESI or it only has to be TEAS.

Wish you luck and hope this helps! :))
