to all the new prenursing students. some encouragement

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I just wanted to share my progress. I am a 26 year old non traditional student. I started out as a pharmacy technician after having gone to trade school. then worked for almost 7 years for a big mailorder pharmacy. I got a lot of experience with medicine. meanwhile, I was also a single mom and worked and took classes since 2008 part time. I had no idea how I would ever finish or how long it would take.

There were SO MANY NEGATIVE PEOPLE especially other prenursing students who spoke about how hard and competitive it is to make good grades in the prerequisites. In highschool I didn't even have the best grades. Well here I am on my last and I am a straight A college student. You have to block out the negative people. They are everywhere! :nono:

Do you know what the secret is? STUDY STUDY.:bookworm: All the time.:coffee:

Be an active learner. When you go to lecture retain what you can WHILE in lecture. Write notes in your textbooks. Use colored pens. Make things bright! Use post it notes on top of notes! Be enthusiastic:) about learning and think about how bad you want to be a nurse.

I wish you all luck. You can do this no matter what the obstacles are if you work hard.

Amazing!

I love that you proved those people wrong.

It's been my observation in life that people don't really like to see other people make major life changes, chase their dreams, succeed, etc. It causes them to question their own life choices and it makes them uncomfortable. It applies to everything- say you start working out and eating right to get more fit. Someone of similar size is going to ask gosh, she must think I'm fat! And then just may try to sabotage you because they subconsciously take it as an insult. If that makes any sense.

Thanks for the post! I am similar to you- 26 and nontraditional. If you want it bad enough, you can get it! Grades don't have a whole lot to do with how smart you are, it's about putting the time in.

Thank @carefulcare for your guiding thoughts! Believing in yourself goes a long way! :)

School is tough and with so many distractions out there you have to be able to discipline yourself...I learned this the hard way after failing so many courses back in 2006-2007 when I was a freshman. And believe you me, those grades still haunt me! I worked my butt off in getting in all A's in my prereqs for nursing school!

You are awesome and I wish you luck in your future endeavors!!!!

Hi Carefulcare,

Thank you so much for sharing your story. You are such an encouragement. You attitude is amazing, keep it up. I'm starting my nursing schooling in January 2014 and I'm so excited. I hope to have a positive attitude like you do. I wish you all the best.

Thank you ❤️

This is an older post but still awesome! I will be 26 when I start school (if I get in) and I had some mediocre grades in high school, but once I decided I wanted to do college and started my pre-reqs I got 80's to mid 90's because I studied hard and had a goal. It is great to hear from other people who didn't go the straight route to know that it is possible! I keep thinking I am too old, have been out of school too long, but that is probably just making excuses.

Congrats to you for getting accepted! I wish to be in your shoes too, I just finished all the prereqs for the BSN program and soon to apply.

we are young! lol I only feel old when I had to cram for an exam and am living off of coffee and three hours of sleep. HAHA Good luck to you, By the way, in high school I had a low GPA because school was easy for me I didn't really have to try hard to pass. But in college I found my intrinsic motivation to study.
