The Ultimate Question!!!

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I've not yet had a direct response to the question of working full time while going to school full time. I'm pre nursing; no children, 29 years old, and living on my own. I work in a hospital that seems to only be interested in helping you if you're an RN going into an advanced degree. Well, I'm just a secretary looking to get my ADN. I have two more semesters and an ACT test to take before I'm done with my prereqs. (I have not yet applied to the program). Is there anyone with no kids and little responsibility who has good things to say about working full time while going through nursing school?

Since you're looking for good things to say - I can say the one semester I worked full time and went to school full time, I worked four days in a row and then did online courses the other days - by the time I was done doing homework I was looking forward to work and by the time I'd finished my tour for the week I was looking forward to getting back on line.

Sriblanc,

Yeah,,this is the ultimate question...work-fulltime and go to nursing school.

Im in your same situation..all my pre-reqs and general ed courses are done...so when Nursing school starts Im looking at 8 credits per term.

Im single also with no kids.....all i got goin on is my fulltime job.

I think its doable...i jsut wish i knew how hard school is really going to be.

I jsut bought a used book called "How to Survive and Maybe Even Love Nursing School" its a guide for students by students...i got it used off of amazon...im goin through it right now,,,it sheds some light on clinicals and stuff...hopefully it will answer some of my questions and reduce some of my anxieties about working AND going to school.

QUESTION!!

When you all say fulltime nursing school.....do you mean 15 credits or 8 credits???

Since I have all my gen eds done...i will only be taking 2 Nursing CORE classes per term which is 8 or 9 credits.

I'm doing the same as you. Getting all the fluff outta the way so that I can focus on core nursing classes. That will leave me with 9 credits some terms but then there are some where I'll still have more than that. And thanks for the info about the book. I'll definitely look for that. It's an exciting time and also a scary one for us-this not knowing what to expect. I hope we do well.

Yeah,,it IS kinda nerve racking not knowing what to expect!

Thoughts like:

"Okay...if I cant do fulltime work and 9 Nursing Credits..ill just quit my job and live off students loans!!!

Then..ya start to think..."but what if i still dont make it?? Then i will be out of decent job and flipping hamburgers!!! PLUS repay the students loans! Then i will be worse off than i am now!!!"

On the other hand I dont see my job being around in 10 years..i work in pre-press at a printing company and everything from camera work to platemaking has gone DIGITAL! So i know i gotta make a change...and i KNOW that Nursing is what i want!!!!

Its just freaking me out all the choices i gotta make,,,then i see people in here that have kids and work and go to school and im thinking..."what am i crying about? i got it EASY compared to them!"

i think ill go meditate lol

if you work 8-5 what time are your classes?

I am in your almost exact position. I am 28 work 40 hours a week and I am graduating in May. I have been working the fulltime the whole way through. I work for a telecommunications company (8-5) job and I have been VERY fortunate that my bosses have allowed me to tweak my schedule as long as I get the 40 hours in. Just like Jami RN, I really have no choice if I want to pursue Nursing. And I also agree with her that I do not have much of a social life anymore. I earn pretty decent grades. I think if you have the will, you will do it. It will have taken 4 years to do a 2 year degree (2 years pre-reqs and 2 years nursing courses), but I cannot believe how fast it has gone. It was been tough and there have been many tears, but I already know that it will have been well worth it. Heck, my Mom always tells me that anything worth having, usually isn't easy to come by! You can do it if you set your mind to it and don't let anyone tell you otherwise ;)

I work from 7-3:30, but I have not begun clinicals yet. I'm now doing distance for my pre-requisites.:p

I was 28 y/o male w/ no medical background, single, and no children. I was also a Hemodialysis pt. going 3 x's a wk. I entered nursing school w/ a full load plus pre req's and worked 20 + hours a wk. If I could do it then so can you. Good Luck.
