Summer Microbiology Online Course at OCC

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I just found out that Ocean County College has opened another completely online microbiology course in their Summer 10 week semester starting May 23 2011. You need to buy a microscope with and oil immersion lens and an MBK LabPaq but considering what gas costs, its a wash.

This course is the 4th section to open and it fills quickly. I am just finishing the spring course and I have an A in the bag. The professor is a dream and I just loved the course. I learned so much.

They also have Anatomy and Physiology courses as well that my friends took. Its a great way to get your science prerequisites out of the way and still enjoy your summer.

Try it you will like it.

Why don't the courses say EduKan? That is weird. My courses said the school name.

because Edukan is basically a virtual extension of six kansas community colleges. You pick one of the six to enroll thru. Whichever college you pick is the college your transcripts come from.

edukan is not its own college.

Is the bio sig that youre talking about, the biosig-id from biosig-id.com? The reason Im asking is because all the syllabi online from EDUKAN say they require proctors. Is it true that Walker did not make you have proctors for anything? What was your opinion of him? Do you feel that the exams were very difficult? Did you feel that the labs were unfair?

Thank you in advance for your answers.

The lab portion of micro takes a lot of time otherwise the exams are fair enough. On the other hand I am surprised by the instuctor's inconsistency as far as the requirement for a proctor for the final Exam goes.

this semester was the FIRST time they used bio sig so everything still mentions a proctor..even my classes that used bio sig still had information about proctors. also its up to the INSTRUCTOR if he allows bio sig or a proctor. My english 2 class still needed a proctor but my micro, dev psych, and lifestyle class used bio sig.

walker is fair and a good instructor. The labs were the best part because you learn a lot from them. the virtual lab is actually pretty impressive...you perform all the same labs you would on campus..and all the same steps.

also..just because there isnt a proctor doesnt mean you dont have to study..there are time limits for everything..quiz, test ect..and the online discussions pretty much make SURE you are doing the work.

what session were you in? only 3rd session used bio sig..

I think you should contact the nursing school you want to transfer to and ask first. Get the person's name you spoke to also. Schools in the New Jersey/New York area frown upon the virtual science labs. I can't imagine going to nursing school and learning how to give a shot virtually or virtual enema or virtual CPR???? How do you learn? I am still partial to the hands-on for myself. Lot's of luck to you all.

learning how to give a shot virtually ( which giving a shot is NOT hard..ive given myself tons with little instruction from the nurse) is hardly the same as learning how to do a micro lab..... what did the nurses from 50 years ago do before microbiology became a pre req  yes its all well and good to learn how virus and microbes operate and function..but do you need the hands on experience of growing them....I dont really think so..not for a nurse.

If you are going to deal with a patient with MRSA, VRE and ESBL on a floor and only have virtual microbiology lab experience, you are up a creek without a paddle. Yes you need microbiology in nursing to deal with infectious diseases my friend. You need to touch the specimen and culture wounds. I don't see how you can get a good education with a virtual lab and like I said, the New Jersey/New York area schools frown on virtual labs.

my course was 'section B'.

I concur with you. The world is changing thanks to technological advancement and even the medical field-'paging Dr Watson'. That said nursing schools ought to embrace online classes.

well thats your opinion...I guess a good portion of nurses on here are inadequate and its a wonder they passed their boards taking online sciences

listen...deal with yourself...worry about yourself ...just think how great of a nurse you will be because you swabbed some strep and put it on a slide...and how I'll be walking in circles wondering how will I be able to perform my duties because I took an online micro lab GASP.

Stop worrying what other nursing students in different parts of the country are taking for microbiology.

Just because you pass your boards doesn't make one a good nurse. Don't put words in my mouth either...you could take a face to face nursing course and not be as good as someone who took an online course. What I said was that nurses need the hands-on. There is no substitute for good hands-on labs even if you are taking an online course.
