Starting pre-nursing in August!!

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

I found these forums and posted yesterday in the welcome forum but thought I'd repeat it here! I am really looking forward to finding how how you all are doing!

......

I am finally returning to school after a 20 year hiatus to pursue Plan B -- my B.N.! I graduated in '85 with a B.Ed and Plan A was to follow my Bachelor's with a Master's in Speech Path. It's funny how life has a way of changing your goals and dreams ... I married in '84 and was a SAHM/WAHM. After feeling slightly "lost" for many years, in the spring of this year, I had the revelation that I was meant to be a nurse! Guess this means I will finally have to stop saying, "I don't know what I want to be when I grow up!"

I will begin with a correspondence course in Nutrition on August 1st and then hit the campus in my own city in September, taking a 60% course load to complete the pre-nursing year! I am really pumped that my funding came through a few weeks ago!

Big changes on the horizon and I'm sooo excited!!

Hope to gain a lot from these forums -- they look super!

The A&P I has lab combined with it - is that how yours is set up? I have noticed several people post where A&P I and A&P I lab are separate courses, but they are combined where I am going. Anyway - all of mine are online, so this should be interesting! I am excited - I can't wait to get started! ;) At least we can be confused together :D

I think my A&P classes are Mon-Wed-Fri at 12:40 for an hour and the lab is 3 hours on Tuesday (something like that). It would make sense to have it all together I think .. let me know how it is!! Online could be fun! How do you do a lab? (well, for that matter I don't even really know what to expect for the IRL lab so what am I talking about??)

We can compare notes .. awesome that we are taking the same courses at the same time. What is the rest of your program like?

Hope to talk soon .....

That sounds good. I've never done an online class with a lab before, so this will be a new experience for me, but I'm looking forward to it! I love science (always have), so I'm excited about these classes! I asked the school and they said that they send all the lab stuff to us and then we just do it at home - should be interesting. :) Hope I don't gross out my hubby too much! Hehe.

I am doing those two classes in the fall, then in spring I will be doing A&P II and I think Microbiology. That will do it for prereqs for me - then I will apply to the horribly long wait list and see what happens. I plan on taking some classes that I can transfer to a bachelor's degree prog. while I'm waiting - so probably things like Med. Terminology, some chemistries, nutrition and that type of stuff. Luckily, I took all of the Englishes, Maths & Sociologies prior to changing majors, so at least I don't have to do those too - whew! I told my hubby that it looks like I will probably have almost enough credits to get an Associates degree once I'm done with prereqs had I not decided to change to nursing - hehe. Oh well, better late than never. :D

This should be fun! I'm glad we're taking some of the same courses together too - we will probably need that support! :) It will be interesting to see how online compares to on campus, this should be fun (I hope)! ;)

And I'm taking Microbiology next term also! Cool!

ROTFL re grossing out your hubby! Wow, I should ask if I can do the labs at home too for that purpose alone!!

I have a previous degree (B.Ed.) also so I have the rest of the pre-reqs under my belt as well (even though it's been a loooooooong time lol) which feels good. I am NOT looking forward to the application for nursing in the spring as I'll be on pins and needles and if I don't make it I'll have some big decisions to make re what to do in the meantime until I do!

Oops, gotta run! We direct a summer camp and I just realized I'm missing breaky ... um .. oops!! Talk to you soon!

Awesome - this will be great then!

Yeah - I'm with you. I'm so anxious to get in, I know I will be devastated when they put me on the waiting list - which I know will happen, it is inevitable, but I will still be really bummed. I hate having to be patient! Looks like we are both on the same track here - it will be wonderful to have each other to lean on for support that way! ;)

have you ever been a camp nurse? Just wondering! I direct summer camp right now so I think I may just have it on the brain but I will definitely be back here as camp nurse some time in my future!

Nah, I'm just a nursing student, (love writing that :) ), but being a camp nurse would be great! What we really need is summer camp for grownups, though, LOL.

Hi Karen, I'm right there with you. Got married, life took turns without my even knowing it and then i ended up, single and raising a fourteen-year-old alone. Actually, my son is great, so that is all fine and dandy. He even gets involved in my school studies. Always trying to be his best when he knows I have to study. Telling his friends they have to leave early so I can have peace and quiet, (without me saying a word). I'm lucky to have such a thoughtful son. But, anyway, It's been twenty years since I went to school. I'm now on my last round of pre-nursing and should start the core program in Jan 06. I'm holding my breath. But here is a little advice for you. Get the highest gpa you possible can, study for the nursing entrance exam that you will have to take before you are admitted to the core program and pray you get a seat. It's a competitive college subject and you will be going up against kids that are use to studying and pick up things a lot faster. If, you've not taking ANA yet, I strongly suggest that you go right to the store and buy big poster boards and write all the info on the subject you are covering, (skeleton, muscles, nerves, ect) And then hang them on the walls of the room you are in the most. Read them every chance you get and make sure you stop long enough to understand what you are reading. Ana is hard but with the right studying anyone can do it. I know, I'm "anyone". And I wish someone would have given me this type of advice before I started. Anyway, good luck to you and congrats on your endeavor. :uhoh3:

Thanks for the advice, nursingyoursoul ... it's certainly going to be interesting! I'm glad to see there are others in a similar boat to me! Hey, I just clicked on your name and you are 5 days younger than me .. tsk tsk LOL

Great to see you and I will take your advice to heart!
