Should I still apply to Sacramento States Nursing program?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

The program I want to apply to is Sacramento State University's nursing program for sprain 2015 which in fact is impacted like most nursing programs. I have a GPA of 3.77 (34 points) and my Teas Score is an 83.3 (17 points). I also did 100 plus hours of volunteer service (3 points) at UCDavis medical center. All in all my total points that I received from the selected criteria was a 54 points. Looking at the selection criteria the cutoff was 69 for Spring 2014. It is very evident that the points decrease my competitiveness to apply. Should I just apply or should I just take the AA or LVN to BSN route? The feedback would be much appreciated thank you!!!

It seems that you are not simply marginally below the threshold, but significantly less competitive than your classmates. I would apply to multiple programs and make your decision based on what programs actually accept you. As for now, it's pure speculation.

I suggest that you should apply to multiple programs and keep applying to them until you're chosen. While you're well below the previous cut off level, it's possible that next time their candidate pool doesn't have people that scored as well and you might then be above the cut off at some point. The point is that if you don't apply, the answer will always be no. Also, you may be awarded additional points as a reapplicant, though this varies by school and schools may be going away from that in the near future.

Thank you for the feedback, Yea you're right its a "you'll miss every shot you don't take" type of thing. I just get really caught up in the statistical aspect of this applying process, which brings me a lot uncertainty at times, but yea I will apply!!!

What's their repeat policy on the TEAS? Any chance you can improve your score?

Definitely cast a wide net when applying. I applied to 10 CSUs when I first applied, and got into 2. You never know what could work out.

Good luck!!

Thank you, that it very encouraging to hear, and congratulations. Unfortunately i exceeded the maximum time I could take the test. I'm just not really good at standardized testing. I did well on the Math and science; however, The reading comprehension and writing portion really brought my score down. I truly believe that this test is not a reflection of what I have to offer to nursing programs.

I imagine that's frustrating. It's hard to truly reflect what one can offer in one snapshot. It might be worthwhile to take one or two transferable courses that can help improve both your GPA and your reading and writing, so that you can improve these skills, which you WILL need in nursing school. The better those skills are, the better. There are a ton of papers to write, and the reading assignments are SO overwhelming. Anything you can do to put yourself in better shape will be helpful. Plus, if you don't get in this cycle, you'll be working to boost that GPA for next time.

Are you able to apply elsewhere? Even applying to ADN programs like American River and Sac City might be beneficial, then you can bridge if necessary.

Yea I understand what you are saying. Those skills are very essential. Im just frustrated on how much time I prepared studying for the TEAS V and I was unable to produce a competitive score. So I'm taking a chemistry class that would raise my GPA to a 3.8 when I get an A, I believe that will add a 4 more points.

Yea after taking the test I looked at my other options. I'm looking into Sac City, ARC, San Mateo, and San Francisco City college. Like you stated I could probably bridge from there. Im going to exhaust all my options until I succeed. Thank you for thoughtful feedback.

I just checked Sac State's TEAS requirements and they require a score of 75% and they'll accept the highest of three attempts over a 5 year period. If you have a result that's beyond the 5 years but above 75%, they'll accept that but that won't count towards your three attempts over 5 years. In essence, you'd have a chance to improve your score 3 times.

Your Teas score is not bad. What other things can you do to increase your points? I see you are retaking a class which is a good idea, just wondering what other areas are you missing points in?

There is a total of 112 points that can be obtained. 50 points for a 4.0 gpa and 50 points for a 99 and above on the teas. There is also 12 points that could be given if you've taken language courses, disadvantaged high school, economic background and volunteer service.
