Pre Nursing with cosmetic medical condition?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hey all! I am taking the last of my prereqs for my area's RN program right now. I am very excited at the thought of getting into nursing school and becoming a RN. I have a 4.0 GPA and like going to school. I have always wanted to be a nurse. I dropped out of high school when I was a teenager for no good reason. Now, at the age of 30 I have gotten my GED and I am enrolled in my third semester of college. However, I have a medical condition that is very embarassing. It's only cosmetic, but I constantly worry that this will prevent me from following my dream. Anyone have any advice for a hopefully soon to be nursing student about the situation? Thanks!

Specializes in Pedi.

Nurses come from all walks of life. Some have medical conditions/disabilities that you can see- I had a colleague who had brachial plexus palsy secondary to a birth injury, one of her arms was significantly smaller than the other and she barely had use of it- and some have medical conditions/disabilities that you can't see- I had a brain tumor as a teenager and, as a result, am 50% peripherally blind on the left. OP, there is NO reason why this should stop you from becoming a nurse!

Specializes in public health, women's health, reproductive health.

I have a cosmetic medical condition, too. I wear makeup to cover it as well as I can. But I have had the same concerns as you do. I'm not going to let it stop me though and you shouldn't either! Go for your dream!

Thanks everyone! It's so good to hear such encouraging words of advice from complete strangers. I really hope I get into the RN program that I turned the application in for today!
