Pre-Nursing Student in LA County

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Hi, All! I am a pre-nursing student, who is almost done with her pre-reqs! I had a few questions regarding ADN programs in Los Angeles County. And anybody who has any questions, suggestions, comments, guidance about ADN programs in Los Angeles County; feel free to write about it on this forum!

1) I had one question in particular. Does anybody know if one will get an association degree (like an actual degree) from the LA County School of Nursing (Generic Program) or is a certificate given at the end? And if a certificate is given, when I want to go onto a BSN and later onto a MSN program, will getting a certificate in lieu of the degree affect my chances of getting into certain programs in the future or even getting a job at certain hospitals?

2) Also, if anybody has attended any of these nursing programs or knows somebody who has, please give any opinions and advice you have! (LACC, LA Valley, Pierce, College of the Canyons, GCC, PCC, Citrus, LA County)

Thank you all so much!

We have a Pre-Nursing Students forum already, so I moved your thread here to get a better response. I also tweaked the title to make it more descriptive.

Not in LA, but I can answer a couple of things:

I would contact the LA County School of Nursing Program directly to see what certificate/diploma/degree you will end up with. Usually when the word "certificate" is used, it's a LVN program...so if you want to be a RN, you want to make sure that it's a RN program.

If you get a diploma from a RN program (and pass the NCLEX-RN), you would be as eligible to do a RN-BSN or RN-MSN bridge program as someone with a ADN. So you shouldn't have any problems bridging unless the BSN/MSN program you're looking at specifically requires you have a ADN.

While being a diploma/ADN RN graduate may be a handicap, especially if you're living in a job market that is heavily BSN preferred/BSN required, it's not impossible to get hired. But it is something for you to keep in mind, especially if you are unwilling/unable to relocate for that first RN job.

Thank you for placing this in the correct forum! (This is my first post so I'm not quite sure how to navigate through the site yet).

I will definitely check with LA County regarding whether they give a certificate or degree. And in regards to RN program, I am worried about getting it and not finding a job so I was thinking about joining a RN-BSN bridge program afterwards or whether going straight into a BSN program would be better. I have heard the pros and cons of both sides and at this point I really am not sure which one to pick! I'm weighing my chances and going with the RN route just because it is a lot cheaper and within driving distance, and I am in no rush to get my degree.

Thank you for replying and giving advice!!!
