NY pre nursing students,have a question..

Hi there...

Did you all hear that they want to pass a bill saying all new RNs will require to get their BS in nursing......you will have 10 yrs to do so.....how do you all feel about that?

Esp the older nursing students....like me....i will be 50 this year...all i want is to become an RN with an AAS degree and work part time for the next 10 yrs or so.....i dont want to be in mangement,i want to work the floor......shouldnt we have a choice?

I am a LPN now...do you think this will be a deciding factor for people to go on?

I thought the proposed bill exempts current RNs? I guess its best you obtain your RN certification before the bill becomes enacted law!

yes it does exempt current RN...it will start when the bill passes....they are hoping for this spring....so if i get into the RN program for fall...and it passes this spring...i will be in the group that needs their BS.....

i was wondering about other pre-nursing students...how they felt about this....??

Hmm, I am a pre-nursing student and I feel this requirement benefits both student and the profession. With the new health care bill there will be an increased number of American citizens and residents accessing health care facilities, resulting in a need for more/better qualified nurses. I understand there is currently no shortage of nurses, but once the thousands of older RNs retire in the coming years, the younger generation of nursing students/nurses will need to step up to the plate. I'm not sure how programs compare, but I presume the BSN route is more rigorous and academically challenging than the ADN route and may better prepare new nursing students for the challenges that lies ahead.

dont you think one should have a choice though?...there are people who go right for the BSN,then masters and good for them...i applaud them.......and others who prefer the 2 yr ADN route.....I have talked to some RNs this past week and they are thankful they will not be bothered by this bill....they said if they wanted to go on for their BSN it is their own personal choice not the governments...

i am going to go to my schools website and look how different the 2 are....

That makes me angry. I just applied for an ADN program. It is VERY competitive and it's a great school, you learn so much! I hate to say this, but I am graduating with an associates degree in human services in May and I don't have the money to do another four years of schooling. The ADN program I applied to is inexpensive because it is a community college. If they enact this law I don't know what I will do. I would most likely go to be a CNA or LPN and go from there.
